Our Williams Family
Our earliest know Williams ancestor is George Williams, who was born about 1785
in North Carolina, the county where he was born and his parents are unknown at this time.
George married Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) before 1812. In searching the 1820
census I found three possibilities in the census index of North Carolina - Anson
County, Gates County and Granville County, further research will be needed to determine
which if any is our Williams family. There is only one George Williams found on the
1820 Georgia census and he is in Putnam County. We know that George and family were
in Harris County, Georgia by 1830. Harris County was formed in 1827 from parts
of Muskogee & Troup Counties and found on page 184 of the 'Reprint of Official Register of Land Lottery of Georgia 1827' on May 14, the 59th Days Drawing is found:
TWIGGS.

Is this our George Williams?????
Based on the 1830 census George and Elizabeth had these children:
- John G. Williams, b. abt 1812
- Jane Williams, b. abt 1815
- Unknown (male) Williams, b. bet 1815 - 1820
- Catherine Williams, b. abt 1820
- Unknown (female) Williams, b. bet. 1820 - 1825
- Unknown (male) Williams, b. bet. 1820 - 1825
- Jesse R. Williams, b. abt 1825 - 1828
- Unknown (male) Williams, b. bet. 1825 - 1830
- George Williams, b. abt 1831
- Benjamin Williams, b. abt 1832
Jane and Catherine are still single and living at home in 1860 but we have not
located them in 1870, however the 1880 census shows a Catherine Williams, age 61
living with the William J. Timmons family in Cherokee County, Georgia, where
her brother Jesse R. had moved his family between 1870 and 1880. Catherine is
shown as not being related to but living with the family.

John G. Williams, the son of George and Elizabeth Williams was born about 1812
in North Carolina, and apparently died between 1860 and 1870 as Mary is found on the
1870 census with the children. I don't know where this family were in 1880. John married Mary about 1840 in Georgia and they had these
children:
- George Williams, b. abt 1842
- Frances R. William, b. abt 1844
- Amanda Williams, b. abt 1848
- Calvin Williams, b. abt 1850
- John B. Williams, b. abt 1852
- Barton Williams, b. abt 1860

Jesse R. Williams, the son of George and Elizabeth was born between 1825 - 1828
based on census records, and he died after 1880 possibly in Cherokee County, Georgia.

Benjamin Williams, the son of George and Elizabeth Williams, was born
about 1832 probably in Harris County, Georgia, although the 1860 census lists
his birthplace as North Carolina. In 1860 he was living in his father's home
and while shown as being idiotic his occupation was shown as farmer. In 1870
he is living in the home of James Layfield in Harris County, Georgia and at age 40 he is listed as insane and denied the right to vote.
