Guilford A. Cook and Family
Guilford or Gilford Alfred Cook was the son of Martha Elizabeth "Patsy" Cook, the daughter of Thomas and Polly Hames Cook. He was born 20 August 1825 in North Carolina and died 7 October 1892 in either Bartow or Gordon County, Georgia, his final resting place is unknown at this time. From information found on census records, he seems to have been married several times, but we only have a record for his marriage to his last wife Elizabeth Frances Bass Lyons, they were married 7 December 1871 in Cherokee County, Georgia. Elizabeth was born 22 November 1839 in Cherokee County, Georgia, the daughter of Unknown Bass and Unknown Ward and died 23 May 1921 in Hamilton County, Tennessee and is buried in Chattanooga Memorial Park Cemetery (formerly White Oak Cemetery), located in Red Bank, Hamilton County, Tennessee, several miles north of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
While we don't know for sure who Elizabeth's parents are there is evidence to support the Bass/Ward connection. In 1840, the Cherokee County, Georgia census finds Redden (indexed as Bedden) Bass and William Ward enumerated side by side.
And the 1850 find Elizabeth living with W. Ward and family still in Cherokee County, GA.

Elizabeth married John B. Lyon(s), who was born about 1827 in North Carolina on 20 October 1857 in Cherokee County, Georgia. Like most men of the time and area, John was a farmer but when the War began he enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army in Company A of the 43rd Regiment Infantry, of the Cherokee Van Guards in Cherokee County, Georgia on 10 March 1862. He was captured 4 July 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi and paroled there 6 July 1863. John returned home to Cherokee County, Georgia and died there 29 July 1863. I do not know where he is buried, possibly in the Ball Ground Cemetery, in an unmarked grave, there are several Lyon family members buried there. John Lyon and Elizabeth had at least two children,
- William Lyon, born abt 1859 in Cherokee County, GA; died before 1870 in Cherokee County, GA
assumption, not on 1870 census with Elizabeth
- Albert R. Lyon, born abt 1861 in Cherokee County, GA; died after 1870 in Cherokee County, GA
assumption not on 1880 census with Elizabeth
John and Elizabeth Lyon have been found on the 1860 and 1870 in Cherokee County, Georgia

Gilford Cook is found on the 1850 census with his mother, in Gilmer County, GA and by 1860 has established his own household in Cherokee County, Georgia and appears to be a widower with a 9 year old daughter and while her age is wrong his mother is also in the household along with her youngest two children. The 1870 census finds him with Nancy A., age 25, we have assumed that she is his wife, since there are also young children in the household, William I., age 8, Jane W. age 5 and Silas A., age 3, but there are also two older boys, Samuel N., age 21 and Henry N. age 17. Census listings would indicate that they all have the last name of Cook - were the older boys brothers of Nancy? Was she his wife? The 1880 census finds Gilford has moved to Bartow County, Georgia and is listed with wife Elizabeth and sons James age 14 and William age 12. Was James mistakenly listed as a girl on the 1870? Who are these boys and where are Gilford and Elizabeth's children? Anderson Franklin, Joel M., Clarsie Victoria and Virginia were all born before 1880, why are they not listed?
Gilford Cook appears to have fathered these known children

The 1890 census is lost to us and Gilford died in 1892, so in 1900 we find that Elizabeth is now head of household and is still living in Gordon County where Gilford had moved his family sometime before his death. The Cooks had made the Sonoraville district their home.

Elizabeth has told the census taker that she has given birth to 9 children, with 5 still living, she had 2 with John Lyon, presumbly both are dead, she and Gilford had 5 that I have names for, Virginia has died, who are the other two children, did she and Gilford have two more?
Anderson Frank Cook is enumerated with the Washington W. Dellinger family in Sonoraville Dist, Gordon County, GA, pages 130/131, as a boarder. He is 28 years old with birth date of June 1872 and is employed as a mail rider.
Changes have come to Elizabeth's family, her children are grown, married and starting families of their own. The 1910 census finds that she has moved to Tennessee to be near her daughter Octavia and her husband William Franklin.

Note that the number of children she has given birth to has changed from 9 to 6, with 5 living same as 1900, we have Anderson Franklin, Joel M., Victoria and Octavia, are my records wrong or did Virginia die as an infant? If she did who is the 5th living child?
1920 still find Elizabeth living in Tennessee, but she has moved in with her daughter Octavia and her family, we find them in Chattanooga

Henry is found in the 1910 Chattanooga City Directory with this listing
Cook, Henry N., inspr C N O & T P Ty, r E C. I'm not exactly sure what all the letters mean, but they certainly look impressive - don't they! Henry died
28 November 1919 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, according to his obituary (which Betty Lemmon will have for us soon) his body was shipped to Warren Station for burial. Warren Station (also known as Shaw) is about half way between Lafayette, GA and Rock Spring GA in Walker County, near what is now known as US 27. [I checked all the online cemetery records for Walker County, GA and did not find Henry listed, he may be buried in an unmarked grave.] We know little about his wife Minnie, if anyone knows her maiden name I would like to hear from you. After Henry's death Minnie moved her family back to Georgia and began farming in Whitfield County and while I have not found her on the 1930 census, there is a Harry Cook, with wife Lois and daughter Joy E. I don't know if Minnie was out for the day or if she is in someone else's household and or is just not on the index. The Georgia death index lists
Minnie A. Cook, died 16 April 1935 in Whitfield County, Georgia, certificate no. 10996. Right now, I have no way of knowing if this is the right Minnie Cook or not, but I suspect that it is. As always, additions and corrections are always welcome.
James W. Cook, the son of Gilford and ??Nancy A. ----?? Cook, was born 15 June 1865 in Georgia. I have not been able to find James on any census records, does anyone have his wife or children's names? Thanks!
William Jasper Cook, the son of Gilford and ??Nancy A. ----?? Cook, was born 2 January 1868 in Georgia. About 1901, he married Alice Martin, who was born about 1867 in Tennessee. They had three children.
- Ellen Cook, born about 1902 in Tennessee
- Mary Alfreda Cook, born about 1904 in Tennessee
married Creed Clayton Tittle
- Roger S. Cook, born about 1907 in Tennessee
William Jasper Cook died in March of 1911 and is buried in Chattanooga Memorial Park Cemetery, Red Bank, Hamilton County, Tennessee. After her husband's death Alice remained in the area and continuing raising her children. William and Alice are found on these census records.

Since Ellen is no longer in the household, we can assume that she has married and started her own family, if anyone knows who she married please let me know. We know who Mary Alfreda married because both are buried in the family burial plot
at the Chattanooga Memorial Park Cemetery. I also need information on Roger's family, his obituary in the online index found at the Chattanooga-Hamilton Bicentennial Library lists him as Roger S. Cook, Sr., but until the copy is ordered I have no information on his family.
Anderson Franklin Cook, was born 3 January 1873, the son of Gilford and Elizabeth Bass Lyons Cook, in Sonoraville, Gordon County, Georgia. I don't know much of his life, except what is found in census records, the 1900 finds that he has moved out of his mother's home, as she is now and is renting a room in the home of Washington W. Dellinger, a local farmer. His occupation on this census is as a mail rider, in 1896 the US Postal Service began "Rural Free Delivery" mail service, so farmers would not have to make the trip into town only to find that they had not received any mail or that important mail had been sitting there waiting for them since their last trip into town. Men on horseback would deliver mail to the farms on a regular schedule thus paving the way for daily scheduled mail delivery which we all enjoy today. When his Mother moved to Tennessee "Frank" apparently moved with her, as he is again found living in her household in 1910 and 1920. In 1910 he is working in the local woolen mill as a laborer and in 1920 he has moved on the the boiler works making boilers. The 1930 census (shown below) finds that he is still working at the boiler plant and has married Mattie Haygood about 1925.
At some time they moved to Rhode Island where Anderson Franklin Cook died 14 January 1958 in Cranston, Kent County, Rhode Island and was buried in Chattanooga Memorial Park Cemetery, Red Bank, Hamilton County, Tennessee.
His obituary is found in the 23 January 1958 issue of the Calhoun Times.

Between 1895 and 1898 Cuba and the Philippine Islands revolted against Spain. The Cubans gained independence, but the Filipinos did not. On 25 April 1898, President McKinley declared War against Spain and the Spanish-American War began. Two days before a treaty was signed 6 February 1899, hostilities broke out at Manila between the American troops and Aguinaldo government troops, the beginning of a struggle that lasted until July 1902. Joel Cook served as a Private, first class, during this war, a trip to the National Archives will be necessary to find where and when he served and to possibly obtain a copy of his service record. Joel was a man of many talents, during his lifetime, he worked on the farm, was a carpenter for the railroad, worked as a welder for the Wielder Co. and also worked for a number of years with the Illinois Central Railroad. Joel M. Cook died in a Veterans hospital in Johnson City, Washington County, Tennessee on Saturday May 14, 1960 at the age of 90.

If Alice was a widow at 22, who was her husband?
Annie was originally listed as a daughter, but that was marked through and relative written over it - trouble between mother and daughter?
Who does Elizabeth J. Burge belong to?
|
Clarise Victoria Cook, the daughter of Gilford and Elizabeth Bass Lyons Cook, was born 4 May 1878 in Georgia. She married about 1911, Talmadge Ernest Williams, born about 1880 in Georgia (his parents are unknown at this time)and they had one known daughter
- Erna R. Williams, born 14 March 1912 and died 8 December 1998
From the 1930 census we learn that Talmadge worked for a transfer company as a truck driver, but find no listing for him in the social security death index. Erna social security number was issued before 1950 in Alabama, so it is possible that the family lived there at some time or Erna may have lived there on her own. All three have obituaries in the Chattanooga Times, which we will need to order. Talmadge died in March of 1953 and Victoria in June of 1955. Does anyone know where they are buried?
I have not located this family on the 1920 census, they seem to have been missed in the index. But in 1930 they are in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee.
