OUR COOK FAMILY
OF SOUTH CAROLINA
AND GEORGIA
John Cook and his wife Sarah Fulton were both born
about 1715 in Ireland. At the Court of 24 Sep 1757, John Cook was
one of several foreigners who took an oath and was naturalized in
Pennsylvania. John died in Pennsylvania and Sarah moved her
family to South Carolina and by 1772 had settled near Grindal
Shoals on Pacolet River about five miles from the river in that
portion of Union County which became Cherokee (Reference:
articles 132/133 - Union County Heritage). Sarah Cook's will
dated May 4, 1783 gives her house and plantation in Ninety-Six
District to her grandsons, George and John Cook. John and
Sarah's children all born in Ireland are:
- John
- Hugh
- Robert
- Nancy
- Elizabeth
- Thomas married Ann
- Sarah
Thomas Cook, the son John and Sarah Fulton Cook, was born
about 1750 in Ireland and married about 1775, most probably in
Pennsylvania, Ann, whose parents are unknown. Their children
are:
- Thomas, Jr. married Polly Hames
- Sampson married Mary Smith
- William married Martha ???
- John married Catherine ???
- Robert married Sarah ???
- George married Martha Brown
- Matthias
Thomas Cook, Jr., the son of Thomas and Ann Cook, married
Polly Hames, daughter of John and Charity Jasper Hames. We know
that Thomas and Polly had two daughters that we are certain of their names and from census data it would seem that they had two other daughters and four sons.
- Martha Elizabeth (Patsy)
- Charity married Hiram J. Brady

Martha Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas and Polly Hames Cook,
was born 11 Mar 1804 in South Carolina and had several children,
but we have found no husband for her. We had thought that John
Tucker was the father of her son Richard, from information that we
found on his Dawes Application referenced in the "Cherokee By Blood" series but recent DNA testing
has proven that is not the case. Testing results show that Richards'
father was a member of the Goins family, which now gives us a new
avenue to explore.
These are her children:
- William born abt 1819
- Elizabeth born abt 1821
- Guilford born 20 Aug 1825
- Cynthia born abt 1826
- Richard V. born 11 Nov 1829
- Isabella born abt 1834
- William Harrison born abt 1843
- Martha Jane born abt 1848
Martha died the 22nd of April 1887 and is buried in Bethany
Baptist Church Cemetery in Jasper, Pickens County, Georgia with a
small hand carved tombstone to mark her grave.
Martha Jane Cook, the daughter of Martha Elizabeth Cook and an unknown father, was born about 1848 in Gilmer County, Georgia and died after 1910 probably in Pickens County, Georgia, her burial place is unknown at this time. She married before 1892 an Unknown Smith, probably in Pickens County, Georgia. They had two children with one living until his late teens at least.
- Alfred Smith, born abt 1892, Tennessee
- Unknown Smith
I have not found Martha and family on 1900 census but by 1910 she was a widow living in Nelson, Pickens County, Georgia. If anyone has any information on this family please contact me.
