William B. Burton, was born in January of 1842 and was married at least twice, the 1900 census shows a grandson living in the household. Little is know of his first family at this time, but about 1879 he married Sophrone Alace "Sophie" Orr, the daughter of William M. and Martha V. Dodd Orr. Sophie was born 12 June 1879 in Pickens County, South Carolina. William Burton died between 1908 and 1910 in South Carolina. After William's death, Sophie and her children went to live with her brother Burton Orr in Richland County, South Carolina where they are found on the 1910 census. She left South Carolina for Georgia with her youngest child Reid, after placing Eddie in the Columbia Childrens Home, he is still there in 1920 enumerated as an "inmate" of the Rescue Orphanage. Tradition holds that she married again, possible a Freeman/Frieman/Freedman and that she died before 1939.
The children of William and Sophia Orr Burton are
        1. Martha Jane Burton, b. 19 October 1900, SC
        2. Lois "Mutt" Burton, b. 14 February 1902, SC
        3. Alice E. "Sally" Burton, b. 22 Apr 1903, SC

Martha Jane Burton, was born 10 October 1900 in Pickens County, South Carolina. Known to her friends and familiy as Janie, she probably accompanied her mother when she left South Carolina. We do know that she was in Georgia by 1919 when she met and married William Marion Carr. They were to have two sons
        1. James Franklin Carr
        2. William Carr

Early during their marriage they both worked as weavers in the cotton mill. Later Janie would pursue a career in the nursing profession.

Lois "Mutt" Burton was born 14 February 1902 in South Carolina, probably Pickens County. Lois also followed her mother to Georgia, where she married M. G. Little (date unknown). Lois died 19 August 1972.

Alice E. Burton, was born 22 April 1903 in South Carolina and died 17 June 1973. She never married. Alice had a difficult time after her mother left South Carolina, the 1920 census finds her in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina as an inmate of the Hospital for the Insane. Family members tell me that at some time her sister Martha Jane took her out of the hospital and brought her to Georgia.

Eddie James Burton, was born 1 Oct 1904 in South Carolina, again probably in Pickens County, he was placed in the Columbia Childrens Home 5 August 1914. He was at the Rescue Orphanage in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina for the 1920 census. While he may have been in Georgia for a short time, he made South Carolina his home. On 9 July 1932, he married Lillian Viola Bowen, who was born 7 January 1912. They would only have 10 years together, as Eddie died 29 November 1942 in Congaree, Lexington County, South Carolina and was buried 1 Dec 1942 at the Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina. Lillian would join him there after her death on 24 August 1987. Their children are
        1. Robert Fredrick Burton
        2. James Thomas Burton
        3. Edna Joan Burton
        4. Kenneth Ray Burton

Reid A. Burton, was born 29 July 1909, in South Carolina. It is believed that when his mother came to Georgia after 1914, she brought him with her. Reid did marry, but his wife's name is unknown at this time. After battling the disease of alcholism, Reid died 7 September 1974 in Fulton County, Georgia. His children are
        1. Reid Burton, Jr.
        2. Betty Burton
        3. Judy Burton
