"In the year of 1765 William Bourne came to what is now Grayson county. He built his first house at Knob Fork on New River and began to clear the land. William Bourne was one of the first settlers of this part of the country. ... He and his wife came in wagons as far as the present site of Fort Chiswell. From there on they were forced to continue the journey on horseback, coming by way of Iron Mountain."

"He had not lived on New River long when he discovered iron ore, and he began to utilize it, building two forges and a furnace on the waters of Peach Bottom Creek. This old iron furnace of William Bourne's was known as the ``Point Hope Furnace.'' It was located approximately two miles from the present site of Independence at what has been the site of an elecrtic power plant."

At a court begun and held for the County of Grayson on Tuesday the 27th day of October 1812:
"An instrument of writing was produced in court by Martin Dickenson in the following words to wit: To the worshipful Court of Grayson County: Gentlemen, I hereby resign my office of clerk of the peace for Grayson County & authorize the court to appoint a successor. Your most obedient servant, William Bourn, October 11th, 1812. And therefore the court proceeded to appoint a successor and Martin Dickenson was unanimously elected to that office and thereupon the said Martin Dickenson entered into bond with Enoch Osborne, Sen.and Richard Hail and George Curren his securities and acknowledged the same and took the oath of fidelity to the Commonwealth to support the constitution and oath prescribed by law for a Clerk."

In the name of God amen, I William Bourn Sr of Grayson County and State of Virginia being aged and inform in body but of a sound mind an disposing memory, callig to mind the uncertainty of human life and being desirous to settle all my worldly concerns and of disposing of the property wherewith it hath pleased God to help me, do make and publish this my last will and testament and desire that it my be received by all as such in manner and form as followeth to wit, 1st my will and desire is that all of my just debts and funeral expenses be paid. 2nd, Whereas I have already given and conveyed lands to my two sons namely Stephen and William and to my daughter Polly Dickenson, and five hundred dollars in money to my daughter Milley McKinney and five hundred in money to my daughter Celia Johnston in lieu of their portion of land, all the remainder of my land to be sold in the manner following to wit to be sold on a credit of twelve months to the highest bidder. To be advertised monthly for twelve months in the Wythe paper and posted at the front door of the Court house of Grayson County at each quarterly Court for twelve months. Two thousand dollars of proceeds of said lands to be distributed in the manner following (to wit); to my daughter Patience Thomas five hundred dollars, to my daughter Charity Blair five hundred dollars, to my daughter Elizabeth hair five hundred dollars, to my daughter Frances Hail five hundred dollars, and the residual of said lands to be equally divided between Patience Thomas, Charity Blair, Stephen Bourn, Elizabeth Hair, Thomas Hail, Celia Johnston, and William Bourn. 3rd, I have given and bequeathed unto my daughter Patience Thomas a negro man named Solomon and a negro girl named Jane and their property. 4th, I have given and bequeathed unto my daughter Milley McKinney a negro woman named Charlotte and her increase and a negro woman named Pat and her increase and a negro boy named George and other property and five hundred dollars in money for her share of land which being her full share of my estate and she shall have no more. 5th, I bequeath unto my daughter Charity Blair during her natural life a negro woman named Violet and a negro girl named Winney and other property and at her decease to descend to her heirs. 6th, I have given and bequeathed unto my son Stephen Bourn four hundred dollars in money which he has taken in lieu of a negro and I also gave him a negro boy Owen and other property. 7th, I have given and bequeathed to my daughter Polly Dickenson a negro girl named Mourning and her increase and a negro named Ransom and other property and at my death a negro woman named Amy which being her full portion of my estate and she shall have no more. 8th, I have given and bequeathed unto my daughter Elizabeth Hail a negro girl named Maria and a negro boy named Gilbert and other property. 9th, I have given and bequeathed to my daughter Frances Hail a negro woman named Winney and her increase and a negro boy named Nelson and a negro girl named Maria and other property. 10th, I have given and bequeathed unto my daughter Celia Johnston four hundred dollars in money inlieu of a negro and a negro girl named Maria and other property. 11th, I gave and bequeathed unto my son William Bourn one negro boy named David and a negro girl named Tildy and other property. 12th, And all the residue of my slaves and other personal property of every kind not specially devised including one moily? of the stock in partnership with my son William which I shall leave at my death, my will and desire is that they be equally divided among my several children namely Patience Thomas, Charity Blair, Stephen Bourn, Elizabeth Hail;, Frances Hair, Celia Johnston, and William Bourn. 13th, and last I do hereby nominate and appoint John Blair and Lewis Hail Executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills and testaments made by me at any time heretofore and in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 15th day of December 1835 in the presence of David Boyor, Charles Hale, Thomas Pope.

This last will and testament of William Bourn Sr. deceased, was produced in Court by the Executors herein named and Daniel Boyer, Charles Hale, and Thomas Pope subscribing witnesses hereto having testified in Court that the said William Bourn Sr signed and published the same in their presence as and for his last will and testament that they subscribed their names as witnesses thereto in the presence of the said testator and at his request and that the said testator was of sound mind and memory as far as they knew or believed. It is therefore ordered that the same be recorded as and for the last will and testament of the said William Bourn deceased.
