Matilda Moncrief, age 72, b. March 29th 1843 in Marshall co, VA requested a widow's pension on 3 Jan 1917 for husband Garrett Moncrief, Private in the 22nd Indiana Infantry.
She was married to said soldier on September 21st 1898 at LaPlata, Missouri by John Shaffer, JP. [Garrett] had been previously married to Darcus Graham who is now dead. [Matilda] had previously married Robert W. Moncrief who died at LaPlata Mo November 18th 1895.

``Matilda Moncrief
Mrs. Matilda Moncrief, a resident of LaPlata for the past thirty-seven years, celebrated her ninety-fourth birthday at her home here Sunday when her children and families and a number of friends met with her on her day in the celebration and to honor LaPlata's oldest woman.
Mrs. Moncrief was born in Washington County, Virginia march 29, 1843 and moved with her parents to Iowa when she was eleven years old, later moving to Missouri.
She was married to Robert Moncrief when she was sixteen year of age and to this union ten children were born, five sons living in or near LaPlata. They are Joe, with whom she made her home, Gideon and D.N., living hear her home and Garrett of east of LaPlata. Four daughters have passed away, one daughter, Mrs. Mary Graves, was killed in the Warrenton wreck in 1907. Her husband died thirty-seven years ago. She has twenty grandchildren and forty great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Moncrief in one of a family of nine children, she and a brother, Ben Young of Gibbs, being the only survivors. Her parents were Aaron and Margaret Young.

``Mrs. Rachel Matilda Moncrief, ninety-four years old, died Tuesday. Funeral services will be held today at the Christian Church conducted by Rev. Dannie Martin. Burial will be in the LaPlata cemetery.
She was born March 29, 1843 in Scott county, Virginia and was married to Robert Wilson Moncrief November 17, 1862. To this union ten children were born. Her husband and five children preceded her in death.
Surviving are five sons, all of LaPlata, Garrett, Joseph, Gideon, Robert, and Doc Moncrief. Besides these there are twenty grandchildren, fifty-five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren and a number of other relatives.
About twenty years ago Mrs. Moncrief united with the Christian Church. She has lived much of her life in the LaPlata community.
She died February 22, 1938.
