Oral History
"Sandy Family
The Sandy family were orginally from England, but went to Scotland for religious reasons, then to America. The father of Grandpa Benjamin Sandy was born on a boat coming to America, and became an itererant peddler, traveling in a horse and buggy.
Benjamin Sandy was born March 13, 1954 (sic), and had at least 2 sisters whose pricture are in the family album. Sade (sic) and Mary Jane, who apparently was a midwife and assisted at family births.
Grandpa Sandy remembered the Civil War, and was disappointed that he was not old enough to go, even as a drummer boy.
Weist (sic) family
Ella Gray Weist was born Jan 1, 1954 (sic). There was indian blood in her ancestry, as evidenced by the high cheek bones and thick black hair apparent in pictures. However, this was something just not talked about then. Her father destered the family sometime during her childhood, and this was another fact that she was so ashamed of she wouldn't talk about it. Her mother died shortly after and she was raised by an "Auntie Gray" her mother's sister, Gray being her mother's maiden name.
She was teaching school at about age 17 or 18 when she met Benjamin Sandy and they were married. They had 8 children, only 4 of which lived beyond infancy.
Ella Gray died 7-14-1922 **age 68 Benjamin J Sandy died 12-29-1934 age 80** [part in ** appended in pencil, we don't know who wrote it --gjr]''
