TIMBERSCOMBE is a parish in the hundred of Carhampton, situate 2 1/2 miles W.S.W. from Dunster. In 1714, Richard Elsworth gave 200l. for a school-house, and 20l. per annum for clothing and teaching poor children, and 40l. per annum to Balliol College, Oxford, for two scholarships, to be held for seven years by men of Timberscombe, Selworthy, Cutcombe, and neighbouring parishes, or, in default of these, from any part of the county, - the choice vesting in the Master and Fellows of the College. The church is dedicated to St. Michael; the living is a vicarage; the Rev. T.H.Cross is the imcumbent. The population in 1851 was 442.
