Alwalton, Hunts

Post Office Directory 1854

ALWALTON, a small agricultural village and parish on the great North road, 79 miles north from London, 4 1/2 north-north-west from Stilton, 17 north-west from Huntingdon, 4 1/2 west from Peterborough, 8 east from Oundle, and 3 from the Wansford station, on the Northampton and Peterborough railway, and bounded by the river Nene. It is in the Hundred of Norman Cross and Union of Peterborough. The living is a rectory, value £220, in the archdeaconry of Huntingdon and diocese of Ely, and patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Peterborough, who are also lords of the manor. The rector is the Rev. Edward GRAY, M.A.,tithes commuted in 1805. The church, dedicated to St. Andrew, is a beautiful structure, in the Norman and early English styles of architecture, with tower, and has lately been restored at considerable expense; a new rectory has likewise been built. There is a small charity, in amount £4 10s., distributed annually amongst the poor of the parish. Here is a small chapel for the Wesleyans, a British school on the mixed system has been established here, under the patronage and support of Earl Fitzwilliam. The soil is fertile, and the surface beautifully varied. On the banks of the Nene are found great blocks of grey fossil stones susceptible of a very high polish. The area is 930 acres; population 332.
