1) Sarah Ann Sheffield - born 1822
probably in Carter County, TN
Notes: Washington County VA Marriages Ministers Returns
1778-1855 by Marty Hiatt and Craig Roberts Scott page 22 Bird,
William J
& Sarah Shufield 18-Feb-1845 Minister George R. Barr I
am not 100% sure that this is our Sarah but it is most likely to
be a match.
2) John S. Sheffield - born 1825 in TN
Carter County died 1904 Washington Co VA. Married Caroline
Neal
3) James C. Sheffield - born abt
1828
There is a James Sheffield on Greene Co TN 1860 census. This
could be the same James. I was told by a Sheffield cousin told me
that William and one of his brothers left VA for TN to join the
Civil War, as far as he knew they never went back to VA. I
believe that this was James. It is also interesting that William
got married in Greene county at Greeneville in May of 1861.
4)William
Sheffield - born 1829 died 1835 (not to be confused with
William S. Sheffield)
5) Alexandrea Sheffield - 1830-1833
6) Benjamin R. Sheffield - born 1836 and died
22-December-1873. Married Mary 'Polly' Wright.

27-April-1837 died 25-June-1923
9) William S. Sheffield - born
09-Sept-1839 Abingdon VA died 15-March-1914 Thorn Hill
TN
Whitney SHEFFIELD - born 12-March-1801*. I have been
told by a SHEFFIELD cousin in Abingdon that he was told that
Whitney lived on White Top Mountain for a long time before moving
to Abingdon area. Whitney must have died before 1880 because he
is not on the Washington Co VA 1880 census.DNA research is being
done to try and determine if there is any connection to either of
the much talked about Sheffield families of Duplin and Moore
county North Carolina. Please see the SHUFFLE link below for info
on possible connection to the Sheffield family of Moore county
NC.
Mary Jane Snider - born 25-December-1797* in 05-Sept-1881
- 1880 Washington Co Census has Mary Jane living with her son
Thomas Preston SHEFFIELD. Mary Jane states that she was born in
VA as well as both of her parents. On the 1860 Washington Co VA
census she states that she is from TN which I believe is correct
and this is supported by the fact that her first son John
Sheffield was born in Carter County TN.
One family legend is that Whitney and Mary Jane were living in
TN and moved to NC and then later took a wagon train to
Washington CO VA. (source cousin Paul P.)
* birth dates taken from copy of Whitney Sheffield's Bible.
