Pond Lillies

By Claudine Fischer

There was once a little girl whose name was Lillian. She lived with her father in a log cabin. He was unable to work. Near by there was a little pond or lake. Lillian had a canoe and often went out on the lake.

One night after she had finished her work she went out in her canoe, and while she was out a little way picking some flowers that grew in the pond she noticed that some one was following her in a boat. He always came nearer, and at last he got so near that she could see it was a man.

She thought that he would hurt her so she called for help but thought that no one would hear her so she jumped into the lake. She could not swim and so was drowned right away.

They found her the same evening and she still held the little bunch of white flowers in her hand. As her name was Lillian they called the flowers "Lillies," and later on the people called them "Pond Lillies," because they always grew in the water.
