Program

Introduction – Attendees should be prepared to ask a question that will help you in meeting the above assumption. We have more technology in genealogy to assist us, but may not be using it. Learning to utilize this technology is time consuming and we often put it off. Fortunately, others in our family may have acquired these skills and will be delighted to help you. We must learn how we can help you. You are invited to share genealogical activities you are working on. You may also make suggestions that will help us meet our goals.

Draft Copy of JB Sharp CD – JBS092504 You may request a copy, but it is the same CD that was presented at last year’s Get-Together. The price of the CD is your commitment to help. The readme file at the end of this agenda contains the contents of the CD.

Family Stories -- If you can’t think of a question, a write-up or family story about yourself or one of your ancestors will be a substitute. This should be in a computer text format. We need to gather these stories about our family for publication in our genealogical files and distributed to future generations.

Publishing a draft of our family history – Computer software makes it easy to publish family histories. We need to share this with our families so they will know the history we have and the opportunity to update it.

Family Photographs -- You should bring photographs of the deceased generations of our family. Time permitting, these photographs will be either scanned or a picture will be taken of them. You should know all individuals in the photograph and hopefully the date the photograph was taken. They will appear on the next CD.

1:30 p.m.

End

We may move to a location that has Wi-Fi for those who have questions and want to share ideas about the Internet. Those having laptops are encouraged to bring them and share their ideas.

Feel free to invite descendents and other interested individuals to this program

 CD Files

Wonderful stories of courage, perseverance, and successful struggles against the challenges of life are uncovered in searching the lives of our ancestors. These stories put “flesh on the bones” on our family tree and begin to bring it to life. Knowing something of our origins, lays a foundation upon which we can build a clearer and deeper appreciation for who we are. In the end, this knowledge really helps us understand who we are. We must preserve these stories for future generations

It is a formable task to take on and we are grateful to our family members who have pioneered in this. Bob Sharp is singled out for sharing his work on our genealogy from William Sharpe (1638) to the present. Joshua Braddock Sharp, a sixth generation descendent of William, emigrated from New Jersey to Randolph County, Indiana in 1839. He has 1018 descendents--1550 including spouses. Our task is to add to the interesting stories about our ancestors who have graced our past.

The computer, the Internet, and genealogical software have made it possible to acquire and disseminate our family history in a manner that we could only have dreamed of a few years ago. This can be a lonely task for the individual, but far more can be accomplished if we work as a family. A computer network is being created to help family members in using these modern tools. Learning to use the computer can be scary, for we often know so little about computers. This CD was created to provide us the basic tools in using the computer to find and disseminate our family history. It should help us to get on a basic computing level. This CD is a work in progress and it is anticipated that it will be improved for our next Get-Together. Suggestions and additional contributions that can improve this CD are welcome.

The files on this CD are contained in eleven folders. You should normally click on the Readme file after you enter these folders.

  1. The Family History Project folder contains latest genealogical data on the descendents of William Sharpe and Joshua Braddock Sharp. It is in both a GEDCOM (GED) format and Family Tree Maker Version 11 (FTW) format. The JBSHARP files have the newest data and contain the 1550 descendents of J B Sharp. The SHARP files contain the 2209 descendents of William Sharpe and this was distributed at Get-Together 2.
  2. The Photographs folder contains over 50 black and white photographs of three generations of descendents of Joshua B Sharp. The photographs are from the collections of Jane Adamson Grounds, Judy Wickersham Redmyer, Norma Hardwick Wright, Ester Helen Sharp Defibaugh, Christa Bales Ellis, and Virginia Sharp Lamb.
  3. The Union Chapel Cemetery folder contains the descendents of JB Sharp, a map of the cemetery, and a history of the Church. Jayne Beers, Jane Sharp Holman, and Wallace Bales made contributions to this folder.

4.      The Genealogical Web Pages folder contains web page addresses that relate to our family. These web pages contain a wealth of information.

  1. The Family Tree Maker Tutorial Software folder contains tutorials on using Family Tree Maker. Additional tutorials on other software are welcomed.
  2. The Software folder contains software that you may find helpful in your research. Most of it is freeware and you may wish to install on your computer.
  3. The Software Tasks folder contain tasks for you to do to assure us that the software on your computer is working. You should go through each of the tasks and make a report on the results. You are to e-mail me your results and I will inform the computer group of the family members that are successful. We will then communicate with each other knowing that their software works. If you have a task that doesn’t work, we will find a way to get it to work.
  4. The Get-Together 1, 2, and 3 folders are three folders that contain data from our previous Get-Togethers.

9.      The Greenwood folder contains an electronic copy of the “The Researcher’s Guide to American Genealogy” by Val Greenwood. This is a 662-page reference book on genealogical research in pdf format.
