The Thomason/Thomasson family has been traced back to London, England in the 1500's beginnng with George Thomason born in 1574 in Sudlow, Cheshire, England. His son George Thomason was a member of the Stationer's Company in London. His bookstore was The Crown and Rose in the courtyard of St. Paul's Cathedral. George became famous for his collection of the English Civil War Tracts, now housed at the Library of London. He and his wife Katherine Hutton Thomason and his family attended church at St. Dunstan's in the West.

The Thomason family were friends with John Milton, the author of Paradise Lost. Upon the death of Katherine Thomason Milton wrote a sonnet dedicated to her memory. To read the sonnet, click here.

George Thomason sons, Edward, Thomas and John were the first Thomason immigrants to the Colonies and settled in Virginia in the 1670s.

My line continues through these Thomason to John Thomason, who moved to Stokes County, North Carolina in the 1770s. Some of the family stayed in North Carolina. Others immigrated to Tennessee.

John Thomason and his wife, Elizabeth Howell brought their seven children from North Carolina into Greene County, Tennessee about 1816 where he raised his family.

John and Elizabeth's oldest child, William Thomason married Hannah Nancy Moore in 1821 and continued our line. They had four children: John, Frances, Elizabeth, and Mollie.

William Thomason purchased and farmed land on Lick Creek and Delaney's Branch. Several times we find him adding to his existing acreage. In 1842 he gave an acre of land for a meetinghouse of the Primitive Baptist Church on the Warrensburg Road.

Their daughter Elizabeth Thomason married John Allen. After he died during the Civil War, she and other Thomasons came by wagon train to the north Texas area. After that I have lost track of the Thomasons.
