Our Tate family came to America from Northumberland County, England in the middle 1600's and settled in Virginia. I have not verified the information on the Tate family. James Tate born 1 Sep 1615 appears to be the immigrant ancestor. He was a planter and settled in York County, Virginia. James' will was written 18 June 1664 in York County and probated Aug 1665.

We continue through James Tate's grandson, another James Tate. He was born about 1662 in New Kent County, Virginia and married Anne Upham. James and Anne Tate's son was Robert Tate who was born 27 Feb 1690/91 in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia. Robert married Elizabeth Waddy. 25 Aug 1731 Robert purchased 400 acres on the south side of Northanna River in Hanover County, Virginia. In 1777 Nathaniel, Henry, and Robert Tate were among the first to renounce allegiance to Great Britain and swear allegiance to the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Our line continues through Robert and Elizabeth Tate's son Henry Tate who was born about 1712. Henry married Sarah Elizabeth Netherland. Henry's will was written 7 Aug 1784. In summary it states "Commiting my body to the dust...requesting my funeral sermon be preached from the first verse of the last chapter of Ecclesiastes, or the 48 verse of the 89th Psalm. Wife, Sarah Tate to have home place, mill, plantation house, land on Goose Creek, for the duration of her life, and after her death to the two oldest sons, Edmond and Caleb." Others mentioned in will: Jesse, Charles, Nathaniel, daus. Sarah Tate, Euphemia rucker, Anna Anthony, Eliza Harris, Mary Davis, Tabitha Calloway, grandson, James Calloway, granddaughter, Eliza Calloway. Henry's will was probated in Campbell County, Virginia 5 Sep 1793.

Our Tate line stops with the daughter of Henry and Sarah Tate, Anna. She was born in 1752 and married James Anthony 29 Sep 1772 in Bedford County, Virginia.
