The name Skelton-Shelton has caused much confusion. Our Skelton family has been traced to Virginia from Captain Richard Shelton. The Sheltons who moved to Hawkins County, Tennessee called themselves Skeltons.

My line continues through his son William Skelton, born March 4, 1762. William served as a private in the Revolutionary War in the Virginia line under General Scott.

William Skelton moved to Goshen in Hawkins County in 1797. His wife may have died before the move. His daughter, Nancy, came with him. Nancy Skelton married John Christian about 1802 and raised her family in Tennessee.
