John Rider was born in Virginia about 1780. He and his wife Mary moved to Kentucky in the early 1800's. John purchased 200 acres of land in Warren County on the Kentucky/Tennessee border. He also owned land in Sumner County, Tennessee.

     Many of John and Mary Rider's children moved near Independence, Missouri.

     His daughter Catherine "Caty" is the only one who remained in Tennessee. Caty married Josiah Bush in 1825 in Sumner County, Tennessee.
