  EVERETT FAMILY

The origins of our Everett family have been traced back to Northumberland County, Virginia in the early 1700's. I have not proved this, but believe it is probably true.

My ancestor Jeremiah Everett was born 6 Apr 1771 in Bedford County, Virginia and moved to Barren County, Kentucky. He owned & operated a mill on the South Fork of Beaver Creek in Barren County. August 28, 1798 he purchased 200 acres in Barren County, Kentucky. (Deed Book 12, p. 467). He married Alcy Saunders.

My line continues through Jeremiah and Alcy's son Simmons A. "Sim" Everett who was born in Barren County, Kentucky about 1805. He married Susanah Hudson in Rhea County, TN and then married Leah Boone (Franks). By 1828 Sim is listed in the Lawrence County, Arkansas Territory tax list. He also lived in Randolph and Marion Counties. He and his family were involved in the infamous Everett-Tutt War in Marion County, Arkansas. Sim was killed in this conflict 4 Jul 1849 of a gunshot wound.

Jesse N. Everett, a brother of Sim, had moved to Texas previously. After 1850 Leah Everett, Sim's widow and other members of the Everett family moved to Bosque County, Texas. In 1860 Leah Everett is living in the Clifton area of Bosque County with four of her children. By 1880 Leah has moved to Nolan County, Texas and is living with her daughter Minerva Everett.

My great-great grandmother is Sim and Leah' daughter Elizabeth "Bettie" C. Everett. She married C. Jack Gossett 2 Mar 1864 in Bosque County. They had three daughters including one set of twins. By 1870 Bettie was living alone with her daughters. I don't know anymore about the Gossett family. 12 Jan 1871 Bettie married J.W. or B.W. Van Zant and they had three children. By 1880 the VanZant's had moved to Erath County, Texas. I have no other information about them.

The Gosset twins were two girls, Alice and Allie. Alice is my great grandmother. She marrried William M. Hunt 8 Feb 1885 in Erath County, Texas. William and Alice had one son. I was told by my mother, who was named after her, that Alice died about 1890 and was buried at Johnson Station Cemetery in Arlington, Tarrant, TX. If she was, it is an unmarked grave. I would life to correspond with anyone who has knowledge of this family.
