The State of the Poor Palatines As Humbly Represented By Themselves Upon Their First Arrival In This Kingdom, About June, 1709 (from London, England)
We the poor distressed Palatines, whose utter Ruin was occasioned by the merciless Cruelty of a Blood Enemy, the French, whose prevailing Power some years past, like a Torrent rushed in to our Country, and overwhelmed us at once; and being not content with Money and Food necessary for their Occasions, not only dispossest us of all Support but inhumanely burnt our Houses to the ground, where being deprived of all Shelter, we were turned into open Fields, and there drove with our Families, to seek what Shelter we could find, being obliged to make the cold Earth our Lodgings, and the Clouds our Covering. In this deplorable condition we made our Humble Supplications and Cries to Almighty God, who has promised to relieve them that put their Trust in him, whose Goodness we have largely Experienced, in disposing the Hearts of Pious Princes to a Christian Compassion and Charity towards us in this miserable condition, who by their Royal Bounties and large Donations, and the exemplary Kindness of well-disposed Nobility, Gentry, and Others, We and our poor Children have been preserved from Perishing; specially since our Arrival into this happy Kingdom of GREAT BRITAIN. While not only like the Land of Canaan, abounds with all things necessary for human Life, but also with a Religious People, who as freely give to the Distressed for Christs sake, as it was given to them by the Almighty Donor of all they enjoy. Blessed Land and Happy People! Governed by the Nursing Mother of Europe, and the Best of Queens! Whose unbounded Mercy and Charity has received us despicable Strangers from afar off into Her own Dominions, where we have found a Supply of all things Necessary for our present Subsistence; for which we bless and praise Almighty God, the Queens most Excellent Majesty and all Her good subjects, from the Highest Degree to those of the meanest Capacity; and do sincerely and faithfully promise to all our utmost Powers, for the future, to render ourselves Thankful to God, and Serviceable to Her Majesty, and all her Good Subjects, in what way sever her goodness is pleased to dispose of Us: and in the mean time be constant in our Prayers, that God would return the Charity of well disposed People a thousand fold into their own Bosoms, which is all the Requittal that can present be made by us poor distressed Protestants.

photos taken at the Greimerath cemetery in 1987 are perhaps connected to of the Magdelena Barth Triesch & Michael Triesch family. Scharmal Triesch Conley has an old photo post card
with the name family Schmitt written on the back. This photo was in Simon Trieschs' trunk about 1938
Also, Joseph Peter Triesch could have been named after some of the Barth family.
The 1924, 1925 letters from cousins in Greimerath to Simon Triesch mentions the family Barth. One of the Triesch boys named Bartholemu and one named Nikolaus. In the 1989 Greimerath meeting with Hedwich Dohm Scharmal showed her the Schmitt picture and at that time she identified Fransiska Jackels in the photo. Fransiska Jackels never married, was the grandaughter of Margretha Triesch Adler
and the G. Grandaughter of Magdelena Barth Triesch. I believe the Schmitt & Adler families were related.
Michael married Margaretha Barth [24] [MRIN: 29] on 26 Feb 1827 in Zerf/ Greimerath Germany. Margaretha was born on 27 Sep 1807 in Greimerath, Regirungbezirg, Trier, Germany, died in 1868 in Greimerath, Regirungbezirg, Trier, Germany at age 61, and was buried in 1868 in Greimerath, Regirungbezirg, Trier, Germany.
General Notes: Did have Margaretha Barth's name as Magdelena as per H.J Schaff history. In church records o f Greimerath Germany it is Margaretha, not Magdelena. The following are buried in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery at Fountain City, Wisconsin. We don 't know if they are related to Margaretha Barth or not. Oenning Addition, Donated by H.A. Oenning 1914. AS MOLLIE TOLD IT
(Written in Colton - 1973)
Henry J. Schaaf and his wife, Elisabeth Triesch together with their six children, ranging i n age from about eleven and three months, arrived at Uniontown, Washington on the fourth of July in 1889. We came by immigrant car or train.
Uniontown had celebrated the fourth of July and had their concessions in the flat near wher e the old Depot used to be. It was just before dark and their Merry-go-around, which was draw n by a horse, was soon to stop, as there were no electric lights, or other ways of lighting t he grounds. Mr.John Billinghouser, a friend of my father's from the old country, was at the D epot to meet us with his wagon. They piled us, and our belongings into the wagon, and away w e went over about eight miles of dusty rough roads to our destination, which was a two-room c abin with an attic over part of it.
The country was new, fruit and vegetables and everything was scarce. Many of the settlers had planted orchards, but they were not in bearing and would not be bearing fruit for a few mor e years. Rhubarb and several varities of goos-beeries, of very fine flavor were bearing in so me of the gardens. Mr B. had planted some garden, but the ground squirrels ate it up and it w as too late to plant more. The first years in this country were pretty rough on a family lik e ours with very little money and a family of eight to feed and Mr B. made nine.
We left a nice little home near Chocrine, Wisconsin where we had our own chickens, cows, goo d garden, but just a small acreage of land, not enough to make a living on. My father worke d on the section near our little town.
We did not go hungry, but the food was pretty plain. Buckwheat hotcakes for breakfast with s yrup, black coffee, homemade bread, which was always quite good. No milk, butter or eggs to-c ook with. Some dried fruit, such as prunes, raisins and dried apples was available but to bu y them in large quantities, came pretty high for a poor family like we were. How our darlin g mother kept us fed is hard to understand. We did our washing on the board also. No wonder h er health broke down when she was still quite young.
We had some fresh pork for the folks had butchered some hogs, made sausage and had lard t o cook with, and a little cured pork later on. Having a little meat from the butchershop, su ch as beef, veal or even some soup meat, was a real treat. School lunches were either syrup b read, or bread with a little lard spread on it and sprinkled with a little sugar.
I know my dear mother got pretty blue-at times, for she would disappear for a short time . I was just a small child of five years, but old enough to see she had been weeping and I wo uld feel sorry for her. She would dry her tears, and be the same sweet person she always was , go ahead and do the best she could with what she had. Always a comforting word for others i n trouble. The next year or so, we moved down to the old Tierney place on Thornereek. Our hou se was a log house, anyway the main part of it. It consisted of one quite large room with a c overed porch on one end of it to the North and an attic, or upstairs' over it, and a lean-t o along the lower side of it to the East, which was the kitchen, and a bedroom cut off one en d of it where my folks slept. Our bedroom was the attic where all of us kids slept.
There was a new house on the bank right above ours where the old man Tierney lived with hi s two grown boys when they were home. They ate their meals with us. Old man Tierney did not g et up early enough so he could eat breakfast with the other men so my mother would get his br eakfast for him later on when he was ready for it. There was a nice cool walk-in rock cella r under the new house which we had the use of and it was a great help in keeping food and thi ngs like meat, milk and butter. Anyway by this time we had cows, chickens, and some garden, m aybe some rhubarb and a crab apple tree that was bearing, so we had pickled crabapples. And t he butcher from Uniontown put a meat wagon on the road during the summer and fall months. H e had a team of horses hooked up to a hack which had a cab on the back of it where he had hi s meat on ice. The door on the back, when open, served as a counter to cut meat on. He woul d stop out by the road and my mother would take a large pan and have him weigh out a supply o f meat for her. Mostly roasts, stews and round steak, etc. He would have baloney in small rin gs (and was it ever good). Sometimes he would give mother a little extra baloney for us kid s which was a treat.
Those days our country school terms were divided in two, three months in the spring and thre e in the fall. I started school that first spring. The two Scharbach boys, Zachery and Bernar d and I were the first graders. Both of ou families spoke German at home, so of course we tal ked German to our teacher, a real nice young girl. She would smile sweetly. I can imagine sh e was some-what amused at the three little German children before her.
We soon caught on, and learned to talk and read. I loved school and always have, My sister Ma rie, mother's seventh child, was born that spring in April. My mother had extra help in the h ouse for a while during her confinement, etc.We got our first wash-machine that year. Bough t it from a salesman that peddled them through the country. It was made of galvanized tin, sh aped like an oblong box, about table high with two wooden rockers on the bottom. It had ai rc hambers on each end in side and an'upright handle on the top, and also a place where you coul d fasten a hand wringer to wring out the clothes. One would take ahold of the handle and roc k the machine back and forth dashing the clothes against the air chambers inside until they w ere clean.
Mother cooked her own soft soap in a coal oil can on the back of the cookstove. With the hel p of the soap and when we older children could rock the wash--machine, it made the task of wa shing somewhat easier anyway. It did a fairly good job, and was a real improvement over doin g it all on the washboard, piece by piece. My sister Lena, about eleven years old, had been g oing to school in Uniontown and staying with my, or our, grandma who lived there with our tw o uncles and Aunt Kate.
Lena came home and mother noticed her scratching her head so much, so she checked, and to he r great surprise, and somewhat of a shock, she found that Lenad head lice, and us other kid s were affected also. I was about six years old and had very heavy black hair quite long. The y cut my hair short, my two brothers, Simon older and Ted younger had short hair so that mad e it a little easier to handle the problem, for some of us anyway.
My good mother worked with us, washing our heads, and fine combing, trying different things . She would think she had the problem solved, and if there was one egg or mite left, it woul d start up again. She finally got rid of the problem.
That fall my mother cooked for the heading crew for a number of weeks (must have been about six extra men beside our home crew). Then a threshing outfit was to come in and do the thresh ing in a week or so and of course we would have to cook My mother thought she had a little ti me to get caught up on some extra work but instead they sent word that they were coming in th e next day.
My dear mother stayed up and cooked and baked all night, cookies, doughnuts, bread, etc. Sist er Theresia, then about twelve, stayed up to help her but she burned her hand on some hot lar d and had to give up. Sister Lena was not home as mother had let her go and help Mr Tierney' s daughter, Mrs Haley, who had several small children.
There was so much expected of housewives those days. No woman nowdays would stay up all nigh t to cook and bake for men nowdays.
I for one would serve them a plain cooked meal, light bread and butter and maybe fruit for de ssert.
Mother was a good cook and put out good meals. She always felt, and said, that the men that w orked so hard had to be well fed. She never seemed to think of herself.
I must say more about harvesting since the method was done so differently thosedays. The rip e grain was cut by a machine called a header drawn by horses (I can't remember how many) an d driven by one man who sat on an elevated seat over the machine and horses. The grain was cu t with a sickle and elevated up a spout into a header box. This box or rack was mounted o n a wagon drawn by two horses and a driver. There was also a man called the loader. He pushe d the cut grain in place until the box was full and the driver drove away, and another box to ok its place under the spout. There were generally three or four of these wagons to one heade r. After that the cut grain was stacked in settings, two or four oblong stacks with room lef t between for a durk table. It was a good sized table on wheels. The cut grain was forked wit h a big fork onto this table, from where it was forked or pushed into the threshing machine , which separated the grain kernals from the straw. The grain went down a spout and was sacke d while the straw blew out and formed big piles or stacks the other way. The grain was caugh t into grain sacks, which were sewed up with twine by men that were quite skilled at the jo b When the sack was sown, another hand took over, called the sack gig. He piled the sack s of grain up into piles, ready to be hauled to the grain elevator close to the railroad, fro m there it was loaded into boxcars and shipped to its destination. Handling those heavy sack s of grain was really heavy work. It was such an improvement when they started handIing it i n bulk. At first they built small wooden bins they could move around and elevated the grain i nto them and later elevated into bulk wagons, and hauled to the ware-house, to be stored in b ulk there, then elevated into railroad cars and shipped out later. It's certainly simple th e way the grain is handled now, and really cheaper.
I shall go back to my story. Mr Tierney owned quite a body of land and decided to rent us par t of it, so he build another house on part of it facing another road. It was a two story hous e, a kitchen and bedroom on the first floor and two bedrooms on the second, and a woodshed at tached to one side. A cool dugout cellar in the hillside right by the house. We moved over th ere and my father started farming on his own. Our equipment consisted of three horses, a walk ing plow, a harrow, seeder and a wagon. This wagon and two of the horses, had to take us wher ever we had to go and it was too far to walk. We had a little livestock such as cows, pigs a nd chickens, also a colt Mr. Tierney had given us. We had raised it by hand, for its mother d ied soon after it was born. It was quite a pet, and we were all quite fond of it.
That fall the folks heard of someone living near Moscow who had apples for sale. My father drove over there and got, four sacks, which was our supply for the winter. We really enjoyed those apples, rationed them by dividing them in halves or even quarters, and Christmas we each got a whole apple in our Xmas box. Anyway things were looking much better for us. My father's father was still living in Germany, and wanted to come out to this country, so my father decided to go after him. He had no money so he borrowed several hundred dollars from a wealthy bachelor and decided to take the trip to get his father, but when he got back there and saw how feeble his father was, he decided to talk him out of making the trip, for at that time the voyage was quite rough and he could not have enjoyed the comforts out here with us that he was enjoying back there in his home. Dad's folks were not really well-to-do but they had enough means to live comfortably.
We were very lonely while our father was away and worried a lot, for fear something would happen to him. I can well remember the joy when he was safely home again.
Poor mom, it was not enough for her to be alone with us, but we all got the whoop-ing cough, and really did not get rid of it until the warmer weather,in the spring.
In the meantime, John Billinghouser had gone back to the old country and brought home a wife , and that next February they had a baby boy, and the mother died at childbirth one half hou r after the baby was born. We were all in deep sympathy, with John B. and so very sorry for t he new baby that had lost its mama.
We children started begging our mother to take the baby. She was a little reluctant for she w as expecting a new baby in May. John B. also begged mother to take care of his baby and wante d us to move in with him so he could be near his child, He offered the folks a pretty fair de al, and they, being the kind and sympathetic people they were, they gave up the place they ha d rented, and moved in with him. It of course it did not work out so well.
After my baby sister Lizzie arrived in May, Dad built another cradle so they had a baby bed o n each side of their bed. Mother nursed her own baby and had little Willie on cow's milk. Poo r little Willie had exema from birth, and mother did not get it cured until he was eight mont hs old. The two babies were more work than twins, for we had to keep the clothes separate o n account'of the exema. I helped take care of the babies a lot, and was the official diaper w asher. I must have been eight or nine years old.
The next thing was the panic of ninety-three, when it rained so much that people lost thei r crops. Some of our grain had been cut with a binder and stood in shocks. A threshing outfi t from Johnson moved in, and threshed very little until it started to rain. It would dry of f a little, but not ,enough to go on with the threshing. Finally the grain started sproutin g in the shocks, and what little had been threshed, did not keep and was not fit for millin g and hardly fit for feed or seed. So it had to be shipped in from other places. People roast ed barley for coffee, and had to save on everything. The stores gave some credit, and we real ly had to patch our clothes to make them do. It was common to see a child with a whole fron t patched into a dress, or a dress or jacket made out of several scraps of material. My mothe r knit most of our winter stockings. We would rip out the worn stockings, take out the worn p art and she would knit in different heels or knees. We also made stockings out of dad's old u nderwear, what was left of it when he got through with it. I was only nine years old but I he lped with the patching and sewing. Most of the natives were in the same trouble and there jus t did not seem to be any money.
My husband's family, the Mrazes, and others, weren't so hard hit by the depression for they w ere pretty well established and had things us poor immigrants did not have.
My dear mother had gotten ahold of a sivler dollar and was keeping it to buy a little cand y and things for our small children's Christmas. We older ones did not expect anything. A Nei ghbor (a bachelor) dropped in and wanted to know if we did not have a little money he could b orrow, for he needed it so badly. My mother did not say anything about having the dollar. Bei ng the kind of a person she was, she finally told him about having the dollar, and what she w as saving it for. Oh yes, he promised to return it in plenty of time. Finally, Christmas wa s almost here and no dollar. My mother wept for she did not have even a little candy and nut s for the little children's Xmas.
My grandma, her mother, lived at Uniontown, so she sent my brother, just older than I, on hor seback with a note for her mother at Uniontown, telling her of her trouble. Grandma sent som e candy, nuts, and a few small gifts home with him. I think I even received some beads from h er. We made some rag dolls for our little girls and dressed-them, that was mostly my job. I l iked to sew anyway, we also made yarn balls, and mother made cookies and dolls out of pastr y dough. Anyway our little people were quite happy with what Santa brought for them.
Shortly after Xmas the folks went to visit some friends we knew from Wisconsin and they too k my sister Mary, then two, going on three, along. The friends had a daughter named Tillie, m ore my age. She was the youngest in the family and had nice play things, including three doll s and a rocking chair. Our little Mary had a great time playing with those things. The evenin g when she came home she pitched her rag doll into a corner, and said, "I don't like my rag d ollie anymore. I want a dollie with a glass head like Tillie's," (China head). But she made u p with her rag doll again.

General Notes: Simon Hubert Schaaf and Theresa Kramer had 9 children.
When Simon and Theresa Kramer were first married they lived on a farm west of Colton, Washing ton known as the Rosnagel place where Angeline, Lawrence, Isabelle and Agnes were born. About 1913 the family moved to a farm closer to Colton known as the Maynard place. Oscar wa s born there in 1914. In 1915, because the children were getting to school age, they had an auction sale and retired, moving into Uniontown where Angeline started the first grade at St. Bonifac e school. Simon spent the winter helping his brother, Ted in the farm implement business. In 1916 Simon purchased a farm, which was being rented out, at Dodge Station west of Pomeroy , Washington. The family lived in-town and the children attended Holy Rosary school. Margare t was born there in 1916 and Louise was born in 1920. During the World War I era prices were higher and the future looked very bright. Simon purcha sed a band of sheep near Billings, Montana as an investment. The war soon was over. The prices declined rapidly and Simon lost all his investment. About this time H.J. Schaaf (Grandpa)'came to live with Simon and Therese as did Joe Schaaf , Simon's younger brother. Joe made his home with them a good part of his life. He never marr ied. Source: Angeline Schaaf Simon rented a farm known as the Hungate place and the family remained in town. After a time , due to the decline in prices, the owner decided to go back on the farm. In 1923 Simon rented a farm known as the Butler place located in Ping Gulch in the Central Ferry area out of Pomeroy and the family moved to the farm. Angeline sta~red in town, worked for her room and board and attended high school. Raymond was born on this farm in 1924. When the family moved to the farm Grandpa Schaaf went to live with his daughter, Lena Oennin g and family at Uniontown. It was here that the harvesting was done with a combine that was pulled by 33 head of large mules. There was no motor on the machine. It operated by the momentum caused b y the speed of the machine pulled by the mules. In 1925 Angeline and Isabelle attended St. John"s Academy, a boarding school at Colfax, Washi ngton. James Triesch, VA's chief counsel for NW, dies at 87
"Big and fast," the old newspaper accounts said admiringly of
James Triesch, the grocer's son who won the 1935 state
championship in the quarter-mile run.
The description still applied as he reached old age and
frequently walked a mile or two through his Northeast Seattle
neighborhood.
Mr. Triesch died Wednesday, at the age of 87, after suffering a
heart attack.
He was raised in Spokane, where he attended Gonzaga Prep. When
his father died, he worked in the family store and attended
Gonzaga University Law School classes at night. During World War
II, he served in the Army Air Force at nearby Geiger Field, a
staff sergeant confined to clerical work by weak eyesight. He
regretted not being able to fly, said his youngest daughter,
Anne Moshier.
Later he became an attorney for the Veterans Administration,
where he rose to become the VA's chief counsel for its Northwest
region until his retirement in 1980. Mr. Triesch represented the
agency in sensitive hearings that included matters of patient
well-being and privacy.
A 1979 case involved a dispute with the family of a World War I
veteran who wanted control over $200,000 in his pension. The
man had a brain injury and had spent a half-century in a VA
hospital and boarding house. "The VA has always considered it
its duty to keep an eye on the affairs of the incompetent vet,"
he argued.
Moshier would warn friends not to crack lawyer jokes, which
wounded Mr. Triesch's feelings.
"He thought of lawyers as having a whole lot of integrity, a
whole lot of honesty," Moshier recalls. So his children were
startled when he once confided that as a youth, he sneaked into
movies through a side door.
Mr. Triesch loved jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, logic teasers and
code-cracking. He owned Seattle Mariners season tickets on the
third-base line for several years, and was feared in a fantasy
baseball league for his research and his reluctance to trade
players.
He collected beer cans and bottles from around the world. This
year, he limited himself to two martinis a week one at
Sunday dinners with his wife, Marian, and one at the bowling
alley, said longtime friend Paul Will, who bowled with him just
last week. The two friends and their wives would walk the
beaches together on vacations in Maui, he said. The Triesches
celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary last month.
Mr. Triesch was pulling weeds Monday in his backyard garden,
where onions, carrots, herbs and tomatoes grew. When he walked
to the house for dinner, he fell on the porch before his wife
helped him inside.
She offered to call 911 but he refused. A few moments into
their meal, he collapsed. Neighbors tried to revive him, then
paramedics. He died later, at the hospital.
"Even on his deathbed I said, 'He's got great legs, still,' "
because of the walking, Moshier recalled.
A funeral Mass is at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Assumption Catholic
Church in Seattle, where Mr. Triesch worshipped for the past
five decades.
In addition to his wife and daughter Anne, survivors include
his daughter Kathleen Triesch Saul, son Stephen Triesch and six
grandchildren, all of whom live in the Seattle area.

Nick was incorrect. Our grandfather (#42.) was, without any doubt, Lawrence Henry Triesch. He died in 1953, and I have been to his gravesite many times. His tombstone says " Lawrence Henry Triesch, and my living mom, Alexandria (Lexie) Triesch confirmed that my grandfather was Lawrence Henry Triesch. I also possess a copy of my grandfather's obituary from the Everett Herald. If you need any other information, just ask. With my mom's help, I can provide a lot.
