3. Elizabeth Musser .

Elizabeth married Henry William Burkhart Sr, son of Michael Burger and Ann Mary Lindamood, on 31 Jul 1788 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Henry was born in 1761 in Coniecville, Shenandoah County, Virginia, died on 11 Dec 1838 in Smyth County, Virginia at age 77, and was buried in Kimberling Cemetery, Wythe Co, Virginia.

General Notes: Virginia Land Office Records for Shenandoah County show that on 21 Feb 1781, Henry Burkhard was granted 279 acres of land on the drains of Stony and Will Creeks adjoining Catherine Fox, George Lindamood and others. This land was granted by Lord Fairfax and Henry Burkhard was said to be "of Shenandoah County , son and Assignee of Michael Burkhard." The land was said to be part of Michael Burkhard's former survey. This simply means that Michael sold part of his land to his son Henry, but as ownership of the land was in a way retained by Lord Fairfax, and the buyers paid him rent for it, a new grant had to be issued to Henry. But for all practical purposes, the land was the property of the grantee. In this grant, however, as in most others in the vicinity, Lord Fairfax retained a right to the Royal Mines, and a full third part of all lead, copper, tin, Coal, iron and iron ore that should be found on the land. The Shenandoah valley was rich in minerals and mines were developed at an early date.

Henry Burger served in the Revolutionary War while he was still a resident of Shenandoah County, Virginia.
The pension records of the National Archives show the following facts: On Oct 1832 when he applied for pension he was 71 years old.
According to his statement when he applied for pension, he rendered the following service as Private in the Virginia Militia: He enlisted and served 4 months under Lieutenant Samuel Vance and Colonel Harrison in General McIntosh's Expedition against the Indians; he enlisted in June 1781, served under Capt. Lawrence Snappe and Thomas Marshall in Col Edmonds' Regiment and was discharged shortly before the siege of Yorktown.
He was pensioned on Certificate No. 16 168, issued under the act of June 7, 1832, at the Virginia Agency.
The name of his wife and date of their marriage are not shown. He was survived by children whose names are not shown.
He resided in Shenandoah County, Virginia when he served in the Revolutionary War, moved thence about the 1786 to Smyth County, Virginia. He resided there at the time he received his pension.
He died 11 Dec 1838, place not stated in pension record, but we know it was Smyth, County, Virginia.
The tax records (personal property and land tax) for Virginia do not begin until 1782. Hence, any records of our people before that year must be found in Wythe County records or in records of the Virginia Land office, and not in the tax records of the State.
Soon after the close of the Revolutionary War, a considerable number of Shenandoah Valley People began to move southward and westward. Among the familiar names of Smyth County families who came from Shenandoah County or its vicinity were Akerses, Griggers, Foglesongs, Wamplers, Musssers, Lindamoods, Vaughts, Davises, Fryers, Neffs Huddles and others.
It is likely that John Lindamood, Henry Burger and the younger Michael Burger, and John Musser (who may have been a brother to Henry Burger's wife) moved to Smythe County together. Henry Burger was married and had a least two children by this time, as shown by the census. They no doubt moved as the other migrants did, by pack horses, or in covered wagons, the women and children riding and the men and boys walking.

Henry Burkhart (here spelled Burker) appears on the Wythe County personal property tax list for 1793 with 1 tithable (man) in his family, owning 3 horses. In 1796, he was listed as Henry Burket, still had 1 tithable and owned 4 horses. On the 1801 tax list, he is spelled Henry Burckhard, and still has 1 tithable in his family and owned 4 horses. He is always listed near John Lindamood and John and Peter Musser, showing that they lived near together, and the tax assessor passed from one farm to the other.

John Lindamood was first shown on Wythe County tax list in 1793 and also John and Daniel Bales, Peter Musser, John Phillippy Jr., John Phillippy Sr., Christopher Phillippy (sometimes listed by his German name, Stephel Phillippy) and Henry Pickle with 2 tithables (men) in his family.

These people evidently stayed in Wythe County some time before receiving a patent for the land they settled upon. It took a considerable time for surveys to be made and legal papers to be issued. Often land had changed hands two or three times before the survey was a last made. On August 15, 1809, Henry Burkhart received a patent for 33 acres of land on the waters of the middle Fork of Holston River, Wythe County, adjoining John Musser.

But he aquired other land by purchase. The Wythe County land tax list for 1814 shows Henry Burckhard with 143 acres, and another tract of 14 1/2 acres, both on the head waters of the middle Fork of the Holston River.

Smythe County was formed in 1831 from parts of Washington and Wythe Counties. Smythe County included Henry Burkett's property. The first tax for the county shows him with 5 acres on the Middle Fork of Holston River, joining Michael Neff's estate, and 142 acres on the Middle Fork joining John Musser and Henry Savely, 12 miles east of the courthouse. (1832) In 1833, he still had the 142 acres as above, and the following tracts adjoining it; 14 acres, 25 acres, and ? (unreadable) acres.

In 1833, Michael Burkett, believed to be Henry's brother, had 5 acres on the Middle Fork of Holston River, 5 miles west of the courthouse. Michael did about 1834 or 1835 because in 1835 his property appears on the Smythe tax list as "Michael Burger's estate.

Henry Burkett appears on a list of pensioners in 1835, living in Smyth County. age 73. He died, as shown on his pension record, 11 Dec 1838. He had made his will on 28 June 1838. It is recorded in Smyth County.

He bequeathed his land to his son George as follows:
140 3/4 acres purchased from Samuel Davis and Hannah, Davis's wife.
14 1/2 acres deeded to him from William Davis.
2 1/2 acres deed from Lamie
25 acres received from Johathan Aker and his wife, Nancy.
33 acres granted to him by patent dated 15 August 1809.

There was a sale of the personal property of Henry Burkett, deceased on Jan 5, 1838. Some people who bought articles at the sale were:
George Burket, Molly Burket, George Musser, Abraham Musser, Simon Pickle, John Vaught, Joseph Musser, Peter Musser, Peter Snavely, Rufus Musser, George Musser Sr.

Andrew Lindamood was also there and bought 1 bedstead and furnishings for $12.00 and 1 large chair for 50 cents.

According to Belle Lindamood Pickle, George Burkhart (son of Henry) had 8 daughters and 3 sons, George, Tom, Mich (evidently named for his great-grandfather, Michael Burger) These were of course first cousins of Daniel Lindamood, since Daniel Lindamood's mother was a sister to George Burkhart, their father. George Burkhart's wife was named Mary, sometimes called Polly.

Deed Book "G" & "H", pg 85, July 31, 1788. Henry Burkard and Elizabeth his wife of the County of Shenandoah , deed to Michael Decker for 60 pounds money, land on the drains of Stony and Mill creeks. Patented to Henry by and from the late Lord Proprietor's office 2nd day of February, 1781. Witness were Jacob Rinker, Martin Mosser, Mary Miller. Elizabeth signed with her mark. Henry signed in German Script. Clerks record has Marten Musser as Witness.

The Henry Burkhard deed is important to us since it supplies the given name of the Miss Musser whom he married, which name had been previously unknow to us.

These people were evidently selling out with the purpose of migrating to Southwest Virginia. Probably they had a little part on this last day of July 1788, after the deeds were signed, and the women served cake and ale. But it was no doubt a little sad for the brothers, George Henry and John Lindamood, who were soon to part company, for George Henry stayed in Shenandoah

Clyde Albert Conley went to Selah Washington in 1934 where he worked in the West Dependable Grocery store and after that in the Hardware store. During WW II, he managed a grocery store for Robert Lince (Jim's Market) while Robert Lince was in the war. Clyde later owned a grocery of his own, Clyde's Market, in Selah Washington, which Robert Lince purchased from Clyde several years later.

Clyde was Selah City Clerk for a number of years and served on the Selah City Council from 1953 to 1972. Clyde also served on the Selah Chamber of Commerce and was president of that organization in the late 1930's. Clyde started the Chamber's Crab Feed in 1936 and it is still (1996) an annual event. CONLEY RETIRES FROM FIRE DISTRICT #2

It is very frequently the people behind the scenes, those that just keep things moving , are the silent majority that really gets things done, quietly and with persistence. Clyde Conley is one of those people. Clyde Conley retired from the position of Secretary of Fire District #2, Dec. 31, 1990, but his actual retirement date was February of 1989. On the date of his retirement in February of 1989, he was asked to stay on for the sake of continuity, so he did. Upon his retirement, he had spent 34 years as the secretary of Fire District #2. While doing this public Job, Conley was also serving as secretary of the Chamber of Commerce. During his tenure, Conley had to prepare minutes of each meeting and see to it that copies of the minutes went to each of the three fire commissioners, a job that entailed a large amount of detail and bookkeeping. Conley also had to keep fire commissioners informed of previous matters that would have an influence on the decisions that they were making. He was responsible for having the paperwork and accounting ready for auditors and he also had to be aware of annexations and annexation policies and how they would affect the workings of the fire district Fire Chief, John Soden, recalls that Conley never missed a meeting. "He was always attentive, and kept good minutes," Soden said. "He showed a definite concern and interest for the people of Fire District #2." Throughout Conley's time as the secretary, fire district grew . It was incorporated with the City of Selah on Sept 26, 1966, and later incorporations included East Selah, Lower Wenas and Upper Wenas. Each time a new area of responsibility was added , Conley's responsibilities grew. Conley had to be aware of the various types of roads and whether access of specific types of fire fighting vehicles would be possible. All problems had to be anticipated. When Conley started as the secretary, the three fire commissioners were Axel Samuelson, Ed Brown and William Dowdy. Clyde Conley is now (1991) 85 years old, and can, at last, turn the wheel over to someone else. Carl North, firefighter and high-school teacher, is the new secretary of Fire District #2. Conley lives in retirement in Selah. (Source : Yakima Herald, 1991)

GETS BEAR STORY OUT OF DEER HUNT

Clyde Conley shot a nice two-point buck far up in the Wenas on Sunday and he almost got a bear in what he terms the hard way, The bear, probably frightened by hunters, came tearing down the ridge on which Clyde was walking. There was not much room to pass so Clyde let out a husky yell and the bear swerved to the side. About that time Larry Tyrrell got in a good shot and bruin rolled to the bottom of the small canyon and two more shots failed to stop him. Clyde sheepishly reported that Bobby Dubuque, who was in the party, also ran. (Selah news paper, sometime in the 1940's)

Alta's survivors include her daughter Shirley Reyna, and husband Eli, of Yakima; son Don and his wife Scharmal, of Kennewick; nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Alta was preceded in death by her husband Clyde, and her parents, five brothers and one sister.

General Notes: Sometime shortly after James was born, Emma Chadwick passed on with a sickness called at the time "Sour Breast milk" which I believe was really Breast Cancer. Shortly after that, James Chadwick was given to some people called Goodwin because his father couldn't take of 5 kids (James had three brothers and one sister, all older than he was). The Goodwins were "foster parents" for James. They brought James to the U.S. as their son and he entered the U.S. as a Goodwin, not a Chadwick. When he was about 11 years old, he found some letters in the Goodwin household from his "real" father and confronted the Goodwins. A Verbal battle ensued and James left the house never to return and changed his name back to Chadwick. Source: John Thomas Chadwick, 17 Mar 2000.

General Notes: Donald L. Powers, 80, passed away on May 14, 2012. We take comfort in the hope that he is now in the midst of family and friends who have gone before and that he watches us with love from the portals of heaven.

Don was born November 15, 1931 in Erick, Oklahoma to Oscar and Ruby Powers. He moved to Yakima, Washington at the age of 11. He started the first of one of his proudest accomplishments in 1950 when he joined the Air Force. His patriotism and pride in having served his country was central to his character throughout his life. He married Elizabeth Montgomery in 1951 and together they had five children.

In 1956, he began a carpenter apprenticeship, another major accomplishment in his life. He became a master of his trade over the years, working on construction projects throughout the Northwest and in California, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Colorado. His carpentry talents extended from heavy construction to the fine details of making furniture and even toys. In his retirement, he delighted his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with handmade pieces that will go on to be cherished heirlooms.

In addition to his woodworking hobby, he and his brother Mac were very interested in the genealogy of the family. The information they uncovered is a legacy left to those of us who remain. We are so grateful that he invested time in uncovering the past and showing us the people and situations that shaped us.

In 1975, he married Sherry Bennett, thereby adding two more children to those who called him Dad. At the time of his passing, in addition to his seven children, he was blessed to have 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Eugene, Mac and Duane and sisters Lola, Diane and Marie. He is survived by Sherry, his wife of 36 years, his brother John Powers, his children and their spouses: Peggy Wheeler, Donnie (Faith) Powers, Jeannie (Greg) Steele, Becky (Steve) Griffin, Mike (Karol) Powers, Scott (Angie) Ellis, and Tammy (Philip) Vago.
