First Generation  Next

1. Mary Elizabeth Busch was born in 1819 in Germany, died on 11 Jan 1873 in Plattsmouth, Cass County, Nebraska at age 54, and was buried in 1873 in Young Cemetery, Cass County, Nebraska.

General Notes: MARY ELIZABETH BUSCH came to Cass Co, Neb from Ohio with her husband DAVID BACHLER.

*Mary Elizabeth Busch Bachler died in a house fire 11 Jan 1873, sources say a child named Mary also burned. Not sure this child was related to Mary Busch. (this still to be confirmed)(According to a decree dated 14 Jan 1938, Cass County Courthouse, Plattsmouth Nebraska, bk 3, p g 82, there were two daughters named Mary)

Philip Bachler's death certificate filled out by brother Henry John, spells it BUSH, says born Germany. 1860 census says Germany, 1870 census says Bavaria. Gravestone lists 54 years old , born 1818, 1860 census says born 1828, 1870 census says she's 54 years old, born 1816. Mary 's cemetery marker in Young Cemetery which was erected by the family in 1990 incorrectly has her maiden name BOSCH.

Granddaughter, Elnora Bachler Vedrine said that she died due to burns when her dress caught on fire while she was cooking. She panicked and ran. By the time her son caught her and put the fire out she was burned badly and never recovered.

Mary married David S Bachler in Germany, son of Bachler and Unknown. David was born in 1801 in Germany, died on 26 Nov 1868 in Plattsmouth, Cass County, Nebraska at age 67, and was buried on 29 Nov 1868 in Young Cemetery, Cass County, Nebraska.

General Notes: The tombstone of DAVID BACHLER was found in Young Cemetery in Cass County Nebraska approximately 3 miles south of Plattsmouth, Nebraska.

W.M. Young home built in 1856. Young cemetery founded in year 1855. This cabin dedicated to Nebraska Pioneers May 25, 1941. Constructed by National Young. To find this cemetery, go south out of Plattsmouth, Nebraska on Chicago Ave, to highway 75, go south several miles until you see a corn crib on the left. Turn left on gravel road, go about 1/2 mile past green house on left, turn left, go past barn on a very narrow road. There is a small log cabin there covered with stucco. You can see this from highway 75, lots of fir trees in cemetery.

Aunt Elnora Bachler Vedrine said that in about 1889/1890 a notice came that David's father had died in Germany and had willed everything to David or his children if one of them would return to Germany to live. Because of what their parents had said about Germany and enjoying the freedom they had here, none would return, though it was said to be enough to make all the children well off financially. (this still to be confirmed)

David Senior's father is ________Bachler, born Germanic country. Source of above statement: Kathy Griffeth. Refer to page 279/280 Biographical album of Otoe and Cass Co 1889 vol 1,2.

A tombstone in Young Cemetery next to DAVID and MARY BACHLER reads: RHODA A BACHLER died Aug 15/17 1873/74/84. Daughter of TJ-TH-JH-and MR or MA BACHLER. (Stone is very very hard to read)(have photo)

RHODA A BACHLER is the dau of JOHN HENRY AND MARY MARTHA BATES BACHLER. There is also an infant of Henry Bachler buried next to David & Mary Bachler in Young cemetery, Cass County, Nebraska.

*Came to Cass Co, NE from Ohio.

1860 census says David born in Germany, Mary in Bavaria. 1847 Philips death certificate and John Henry's obit says Ohio. 1855 Henry John's obit says Coshocton also 1860 census . 1856 H/J.'s obit says moved to Rock bluff when was 6 months old. 1860 Rock Bluff census has son Charles born in Nebraska 1858. 1870 Rock Bluff census, David no longer living. Children at home; John, Philip, Catherine, David and Mary.

Sources say that David died of pneumonia, he refused to go to the doctor for a bad cold or even try to take care of himself and when the doctor did come nothing could be done for him.

Mrs, Nettie Smith left us on that beautiful Sunday. Rather stately-abit stern at times-social standing nor statistics meant nothing to her. There was a certain pride that showed up along the years we knew her, and until her physical being slowed down-she was quick of step and proud to be able to care for her family. She liked pretty things, but never complained about what she didn't have. Source: Glenwood Opinion-Tribune, Fri Oct 12, 1979.

ISAIAH F. WOOD, living a few miles southeast of Blue Light post office, in Klickitat county, is a prosperous young farmer twenty-eight years of age, a native of the state of Nebraska . His father, Wiley Wood, was raised in Colorado, but when still a young man removed to Nebraska, where he followed farming as his principal occupation, although by trade he was a mason.. He is still living in the northern part of that state. Our subject's mother, Mary (Fifer ) Wood, a native of Ohio died in Nebraska when Isaiah was only thirteen years old. The subject of this article received his education in the common schools of Nebraska, then worked for a time as a farm hand there, but when still quite young he removed to Washington, locating in Klickitat county, where, for a year or so, he followed various occupations, part of the time being employed by Hans Tranberg. In the spring of 1899, he filed on a homestead three miles southeast of Blue Light Post office, where he has since made his home, devoting his time to the cultivation and improvement of his hundred and sixty acres of fine farming land. He is one of a family of twelve children, all of whom are still alive. His sisters, Mrs Ida Campbell, Mrs Ella Campbell and Mrs Dosha Carrell, Mary, Rose and Dovie and his brothers, Edgar and Samuel, reside in Nebraska. He has one brother, William, living near him in Klickitat county and one brother Clarence B, at Kennewick, Washington. In Political affairs, Mr Wood takes great interest being a active worker in the Republican party. To get a start financially has cost him a struggle, as it does almost all young men, but he is industrious and thrifty and possessed of qualities which win him esteem and respect and a promising future is his . THE BACHLER FIRE

Shortly after one o'clock Thursday afternoon fire was discovered in Alex Bachler's barn on his farm 4 miles north of Thurman in the Dutch Hollow neighborhood. it appeared that the fire originated in the basement at the south side of the barn and owing to the strong south wind the fire was beyond control before discovered.
Mrs. Bachler and her daughter in-law, were in the house and the men had gone to the field to work. The women folks heard a roaring sound but thought it a car going by or driving in , but not seeing any one, they investigated and discovered the fire.
They tried to call the men, but Mr Bachler had seen the fire about that time and hurried in and tried to save what he could. Mrs. Turnbull saw the blaze and smoke also from the Britta in farm house north and she and Charles Tarpenning, Earl Brittian and Jay Briley hurried to the scene and did what they could, but the fire soon spread from the large barn to the corn cribs and implements sheds on the north and east and only a few pieces of machinery were saved.
Mr. Bachler was badly burned on hands, arms and face, trying to save some machinery. Mrs . Bachler whose health was poor anyway, was so overcome with the shock and worry over her husband that she collapsed and Dr. Miller was called before she could be relieved.
In the meantime Mr. Bachler, not knowing the condition of his wife had been hurried to Dr. Miller's office in Tabor and he being gone went to Dr. Roark, who dressed his burns, and he returned home.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Bachler are still in a serious condition, but hopes are entertained for their recovery.
The amount of damage cased by the fire is not known, but is a very large amount. One good horse was burned in the barn, also two calves and it is believed some hogs and chickens. Also about 1,000 bushels of ear corn, some hay and much farm machinery of all kinds. There were 27 small pigs in a shed and they were all destroyed.
The machinery is twisted and bent and the temper drawn by the terrific heat, so that they will be of little value even though the wood parts might be replaced. The barn was a very large structure with basement below the regular floor and also had a large hay mow, and could house many head of stock in addition to the hay and grain. The loss is only partly covered by insurance. (Newspaper and date unknown)

DOUBLE KIDNAPING

The Tabor Beacon says: "A case of the father kidnaping his own child and then to have th e child's mother steal him from his father has created some excitement in the vicinity . Sometime last summer Will McDonald and wife and young son, accompanied by the Woman' s father Henry Bachelor went to to Dakota. According to Mrs McDonald's story her husband didn 't like to work, so she had to get out and hustle for herself. The child was placed in care o f another woman. McDonald suddenly took a notion to return to Iowa, and when he came he broug ht the child along, stopping at his father's home in Glenwood. The first of this week Mrs McD onald and her father appeared on the scene. Wednesday they went to Sidney to get out repletio n papers for her boy. The lawyers told them to go and get the kid without papers. This they a ccordingly did, fortunately finding McDonald away from home. The boy was brought to Tabo r on Thursday where Mr Bachelor and his daughter hired an auto to take them to Nebraska City . What the outcome will be no one is able to forecast at this time. In the histories of Todd and Wadena Counties they both say that Vina was adopted. Her daught ers said that nothing was ever said of her adoption but that she had an adopted brother name d Willie. On getting her birth certificate she is listed as Lavina Jane Griffen with the Lee 's as her parents. She was born in Aug and it was filed in Dec. Her daughters say that the G riffen was her mothers (it isn't) or grandmothers maiden name(unknown yet) There were no kno wn Griffens in Todd county until 1890's

Vina had a touch of tuberculosis and suffered from allergies in Minn. Lenora Pearl Woods Bach ler said the last years spent in MN she was unable to sleep laying down. She had to have pil lows propping her up to a sitting position in order to get enough air to breathe. It was on e of the reasons that they moved to Montana.

As much as she loved to dance s he quit going because of it.

I personally don't remember much of her, except that when they lived next door She would si t in front of the north living room window in her rocker and rock and twiddle her thumbs by t he hour

Moved to Whitefish in 1919, while they were here child 3, Lillian was born Between Leal and A unt Nora and Sarah Lee Vina nearly had a break down and in order to get her health back the y returned to Verndale for a year. Much of the hard work was left to Vina to do and her son Levi helped in any way he could. Le vi's wife said that he went with her to gather firewood and cow chips for fuel so that she wo uldn't have to carry it

William Alfred Bachler son of Laura Belle Dyke and John Alexander Bachler was born on a farm northwest of Thurman, Iowa on April 24th 1900 and passed to his eternal reward, following an extended illness at his home in the West Oak Community on Thursday, Dec. 7th 1972. He had attained the age of seventy-two years, seven months and thirteen days.--The early years of his life were spent on the farm in the Thurman community. As a lad he attended the old Dutch Hollow School, later graduated from Thurman High school. Where ever he went he made many wonderful and lasting friendships. --On March 20th, 1920 he was united in marriage with Carrie Alph a Boldra of Thurman, Iowa. To this union were born three children: Maxen Elvis Bachler of Hastings, Iowa, Dorothy June Fulton of San Diego, California and Lea Lawson of Lafayette, California. In the years following their marriage they lived at Cherokee, Iowa, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Fremont, Nebraska, and Plattsmouth, Nebraska. However, they finally settled in the Glenwood area where he was employed for many years at the Glenwood State Hospital School. In 1949 they moved to the home in the West Oak Community, where they spent the remaining years of their life. --During the years that his wife, Carrie, was so seriously ill, he faithfully and lovingly cared for her every need. His calm confidence in God Eternal Purposes never wavered. He was like a Rock of Gibraltar to the near and dear by the ties of the flesh. As a lad he received the Lord Jesus Christ as his Personal Saviour, becoming a member of the Christian Church at Tabor, Iowa. --A man of quiet disposition, he was kind and gentle at all times. There were few wasted moments in his life; for he was not a "Talker" but spending many hours in his shop and in his garden. When he could find time he loved to fish by some quiet stream. He always shared the fruit of his labors with his family and friends. He was a good husband and a loving father, and was especially attached to his grandchildren. --Among those who will always hold the memory of this good man precious are his Three children: Max E. Bachler of Hasting s, Iowa. Mrs. Eugene Fulton of San Diego, California, Carrie Jo Brown of Council Bluffs, Iowa , and Robin Fulton of San Diego, California, two great grand children: Scottie and Brenda Fulton of Phoenix, Arizona, a brother: Richard A. Bachler of El Reno, Oklahoma, a sister: Mrs. Vera Van Arsdel of Council Bluffs, Iowa and a host of other relatives and friends. His wife, a brother and a grand-son preceeded him in passing.
