![Washington County Newspaper] V. J. Sullivan Drowns Sunday Afternoon in Cox Irrigation Reservior
Body Discovered by Barr Musser Jr. When Boys Tell Him That V. J. Is In Pond
Victor Joseph Sullivan, 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Sullivan of this city, accidentally drowned Sunday, July 10 at approximately 5 p.m. Death came when he was showing his brother and a cousin his ability as a swimmer, in Dr. W. C. Cox's reservoir.
The lad had tested the water and depth and had decided that he could swim in the reservoir safely. He swam back and forth across the pool several times, according to the boys, getting out and going back a number of times. On the fatal trip he started back and "went up and down a couple of times," stated the children, but they thought that he was only trying to show off.
His death was discovered when Barr Musser, Jr. and Everard Cox went to the pool to swim. The boys report that they had been swimming for about thirty minutes when they noticed that Ralph Sullivan, brother of V. J. as he was known to his friends and family, was crying. When he asked him what the trouble was he repliced that "his brother was in the pool". Investigation by Barr proved the statement to be true and he pulled V. J. out and sent Everard for help. Everard went to his home where a doctor was called and Mr. Sullivan notified.
Every effort was made to save the boy, but he had been in the pool too long and it was impossible to revive him.
Not Supposed to Be at Pool
No thought of his danger came to his parents since he was not supposed to be at the pool. He and his brother Ralph, 5, had gone to play with his cousin, Robert Gardner. The boys then went to see a friend, Harry Thompson later wandering up to the pond. The boys report that V. J. measured they water and thought it would be alright to go in. He swam around and got out four or five times and the last time swam across the pond and back again before he either gave out or strangled and went down and came up twice. Ralph and Robert said they thought he was doing tricks and didn't realize what was wrong.
When he received the call notifying him of his son's death, Mr. Sullivan didn't tell his family, but went directly there to see if anything could be done. The doctor had arrived before him and was attempting to revive the boy, but it was then too late to save his life since the doctor estimated V. J. had been dead for over thirty minutes when he first arrived. Mr. Sullivan then had to go home and break the sad news of V. J.'s death.
Funeral Services
Funeral Services were held in the Stake Tabernacle a 5 p.m. Monday afternoon under the direction of Bishop Harold S. Snow of the South Ward.
Speakers were H. Val Hafen and Dr. W. J. Reichmann and Bishop Snow. Tributes were paid to the life of V. J. who was loved by everyone who knew him and to the lives of his parents, brothers and sisters. Bishop Snow paid special tribute to the family for the wonderful support they had given to the ward organization.
The opening prayer was given by Gus Pendleton, first counselor to Mr. Sullivan in the Elders Quorum, and the closing prayer was made by Pres. Orval Hafen. The grave was dedicated by Walter Cannon.
Musical numbers included "I Think When I Read That Sweet Story of Old", sung by a quartette, a violin solo, "One Fleeting Hour", by Irene Everett; vocal solo "My Father Knows", by Ruth Miles and a vocal duet, "In the Garden" sung by Ruth Miles and Alice Cannon.
Victor Joseph Sullivan was born February 11, 1927 at St. George the son of Victor and Clio McArthur Sullivan. He was to enter the fifth grade this fall at the Elementary school.
Besides his parents he is survived by six sisters and two brothers as follows: Mary, Edith, Lela, Deloris, Alma, Cleo, Ralph and Robert.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Ellen Oxborrow, Dell Chamberlin and Mr. and Mrs. Anderson, Standard Station superintendent from Cedar City.
