Christopher Shakespeare
of Packwood
|
Christopher Shakespeare and his wife Isabella joined
the Knowle Guild in 1511-12. Christopher is also mentioned in a Packwood
document of 1528. A property called 'Petters' is recorded in his tenure,
and that of his sons William and John - in 1544 this property was granted
to William Sheldon. Charity lands in Tanworth were also held by Christopher in 1553. Here is a clue to Christophers extended family: the will of Richard Wescott of Tonworthe (Tanworth-in-Arden), dated 1562, mentions Roger Shakespeere and Elizabethe his wyfe, my daughter, and Christofer Shakespere as beneficiaries - is the Roger referred to Christopher's son of the same name, or possibly his father? Christopher appears on Subsidy Rolls for 1548-9 and 1549-50. He died about 1558. His will, written in 1551, leaves his copyhold called 'Hancoxe' to William, and names his wife Isabel, other sons Richard, Roger, Christopher, and John, daughters Alice and Agnes, and son-in-law William Featherstone (see E K Chambers 'William Shakespeare', App. E., p 366). There was one other recorded Christopher Shakespeare, mentioned as a brother in the will of John Shakespeare, Yeoman, of Lapworth. John also mentions another brother, William. These names, of course, are consistent with those mentioned in the will of the earlier Christopher, and provide the vital clue that John Shakespeare of Lapworth was the son of Christopher Shakespeare of Packwood. The younger Christopher, brother of John of Lapworth, was buried at Rowington in 1638. Several other members of John's family, eg Humphrey, are also buried at Rowington. |
