| Lettyce Shakespeare was born in 1582,
the daughter of Henry Shakespeare of Snitterfield. She married John Drake in 1616 and the Hampton -In - Arden parish register records at least four of their children, John (born 1616), Esther (born 1618), Job (born 1620), and an unnamed son baptised in 1622 (this appears on the IGI). A further child, Elizabeth, is recorded in 1625, but her mother's name was Elizabeth, presumably John's second wife. John reappears in New England in the 1630's along with his children, and second wife Elizabeth. The names and ages of three of the children are consistent with three of the children who reappear with John in Windsor, Connecticut, these being John, Job and Elizabeth. Two other children, Jacob and Mary Drake, were also present in New England with their father, but do not seem to be recorded at Hampton - In - Arden. However the IGI does record a further son (born 1622) of John & Lettyce Drake, without giving his Christian name - this is could possibly be Jacob. It seems that there were two John Drakes present in this part of New England at around the same time, the other one being a cousin of Sir Francis Drake, born in Devon. For many years American genealogists have identified the father of John, Job, Elizabeth, Jacob and Mary with this cousin of Sir Francis. However, recent research following the identification with the John & Lettyce Drake of Warwickshire reveals that the cousin of Sir Francis seems to have died. Confusion has arisen because both John Drakes had wives named Elizabeth. |
