Mordecai Shakespeare

of Birmingham

A number of entries on the IGI refer to the name Mordecai - not all the same man but presumably the same family.

The first of these is:

  • married 16 Sept 1656, at Aston, Mordecay Shakespeare and Katherin Sadler

The next entry, and probably referring (ie the father) to a son of the above is:

  • born 8 Apr 1684, bapt 18 Apr 1684, William son of Mordecai and Mary Shakespeare

It is quite probable that the Mordicia Shakespeare who married Ester Heely 27 Apr 1701 is also a child of Mordecai and Mary.

  • The final entry for the name is for a Mordecai son of John Shakespeare bapt 16 Jan 1714 at St John, Deritend & Bordesley
  • Also there is a baptism for a Thomas, probably a son of this John Shakespeare 14 Dec 1713 at St Martin, Birmingham

The children of this Mordecai, who married Frances Smith 26 Sept 1742, at St Martin, Birmingham, are:

  • Samuel bapt 1 Aug 1743, bur 2 Feb 1745, St Martin, Birmingham
  • John bapt 25 Jan 1744, St Martin, Birmingham
  • Sarah bapt  29 Dec 1746, St Martin, Birmingham
  • Samuel bapt 29 Dec 1748, St Martin, Birmingham
  • Mary bapt 9 March 1750, St Martin, Birmingham
  • Frances bapt 11 June 1753, St Martin, Birmingham
  • Thomas bapt 22 June 1755, Aston

It is certain that Mordecai originated in Wroxall, where he is mentioned as a beneficiary in the will of Eleanor Tompson, who died in 1637. The same will mentions Alice Winmill,  the god-daughter of John Shakespeare, mentioned in his will of 1574 - another clue to the connection between these two Shakespeare families.

There are records of two John Shakespeares born in 1736 - one of these (as yet undetermined) is the John Shakespeare 1736 - 1814 detailed on a separate page. Both appear to descend from the above families as follows:
  • John bapt 21 May 1736, at St Martin, Birmingham, son of Thomas Shakespeare. This Thomas is probably the one bapt 14 Dec 1713, at St Martin, Birmingham, the son of John, as detailed above.
  • John bapt 6 Aug 1736, at St Martin, Birmingham, son of John. This John was bapt 11 June 1711, also at St Martin, Birmingham, the son of William. This William appears to be the one born in 1684, the son of Mordecai and Mary, as detailed above.
