The Shakespeares of

Badby, Northamptonshire

The Northamptonshire Marriage Index includes a number of marriages which do not appear on the IGI:

From this it can be seen that the same James Shakespeare possibly married twice - the second time 37 years after the first.

No children of any of these male Shakespeares appears on the IGI, but there are children listed for William Garret & Sarah Shakespeare:

Two earlier Northamptonshire marriages are also listed in the index:
The 1712 marriage, records the grooms place of birth as Badby, which may indicate a further connection. The 1744 marriage, of a John Shakespeare, is interesting - this individual is of the correct presumed age to be the John Shakespeare buried at Whitfield in 1794, so possibly the Badby and Whitfield families may be connected: these are the only two Shakespeare families found in Northamptonshire so far, and William Shakespeare, of Whitfield, born about 1766, fits into the time period of the Badby family. The place of origin of John is given as Grafton. This may be Temple Grafton, near Stratford on Avon, a place associated with Anne Whateley - whose marriage license record (to a William Shakespeare) appears in the register of the Bishop of Worcester on the day before the entry for the Poet, William Shakespeare: an entry which has led to much speculation over the years. An interesting co-incidence, if this is the same place, but almost certainly of no relevance to the family in question.
