Jack Campbell Shakespear
Miles was born on March 6, 1918 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has
lived in Vancouver, Edmonton, Buenos Aires, Moncton, and Surrey where
he is living at the moment.
Jack has an interesting story to tell about his name. The name,
Campbell Shakespear Miles, came from his great grandfather, Sir
Richmond Campbell Shakespear, who was knighted by Queen Victoria.
After his great grandfather was knighted, "Shakespear Miles" was used
by the family like a surname. All Jack's brothers and sisters have the
name, "Shakespear Miles."
Before Jack retired he was a consultant in aviation. He loves
gardening and playing golf. He likes using the Internet to browse and
play games. He sends e-mail to relatives and friends in his spare
time.
An experience that is important to him (other than meeting his wife,
Enid 48 years ago)was joining the war to fight for his country’s
freedom. It was also important because it started his career as a
consultant in aviation.
In 1940, he went to the British Consulate in Buenos Aires where he was
assigned to leave on the Upwey Grange, a meat ship, that carried six
volunteers. On Sunday, however, Jack had a motorcycle accident that
seriously injured his ankle. He was, consequently, unable to board the
ship and the ship left without him. The Upwey Grange was torpoeded off
the coast of Brazil and all the people on board were lost. The
motorcycle accident, it turned out, was a lucky event for Jack.
Another memory was flying over Saigon and crashing the plane while
bringing prisoners of war back to England. That was important to him
because his life was in grave danger. The people involved in this
experience were his co-pilot, the navigator, the wireless operator,
the prisoners of war, and himself.
Jack's favorite object is his Jaguar. He bought the car in 1976. It
took six months to be delivered, so really he has only had it since
1977. He saw it when he was over in England doing business and decided
to buy this brand new Jaguar because the salesman gave him a deal. He
plans to pass this treasure to his grandson who lives in Australia.
