John Shakespeare
of St Martin's In The Fields
|
Our information on this family comes from Charlotte
Stopes 'Shakespeare's Family'
Chapter XIV (p 145). Here she describes her initial confusion at there
being two contemporary John Shakespeares in London, and her researches to
disentangle them. A few details of this family also appear on the IGI. Little of this John Shakespeare is known other than his marriage to Dorothea Dodde on the 22nd January 1589, at St Martin's in the Fields, the place where Dorothea was subsequently buried in 1669. John and Dorothea's only recorded child, Maria Shakespeare, was baptised 23 Dec 1593, also at St Martin's in the Fields. There are a few further clues about Dorothy Dodd's family: she had a sister, Elizabeth, buried at the same church in 1594, her burial entry describes her as 'from Shakespeare's.' Another sister, Jane married a Christopher Wren, in 1588. What is interesting is that, whether or not he was of the same family as the Sir Christopher Wren, the famous architect of the same name had connections with the area of Warwickshire synonymous with the Shakespeares. |
