Mr. & Mrs. Melville Miller Succumb within 36
hours of each other.
Mrs. Olive Mae Miller, 80, of the Metz area southwest of
Newton died at 7:10 o'clock Sunday night at Skiff Memorial
hospital in Newton. Her husband, Melville Truman Miller, a
Metz retired farmer had died at 8:18 o'clock Saturday
morning in the hospital. Both deaths were due to the
infirmities of old age.
Double funeral services will be held at two o'clock
Wednesday afternoon at the First Lutheran church in Newton.
Rev. Fred D. Boldt will officiate. Burial will be in the
Sugar Grove cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Miller would have
celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary Feb. 1. They were
married in 1893 in Des Moines and had spend their entire
married life near Metz.
Mr. Miller was well known in Jasper county. In addition to
farming, he had operated a creamery, grain elevator and
store in Metz and had been a livestock buyer. He had also
mined copper in Mexico and had been employed by the state of
Washington for a time before his marriage. He was a member
of the Daily News Three Quarters Century club.
The son of George W. and Emily Helphrey Miller, Mr. Miller
was born May 26, 1861, in Sherman township. He attended the
Jasper county schools, went to business college in
Burlington and attended Hazel Dell Academy in Newton.
Mrs. Miller was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Carnaby
Johnson. She was born July 26, 1868 in Lucas county. She had
received her education in the Jasper county schools.
The Millers are survived by two daughters, Bertha, at home,
and Mrs. A. G. Hauge of Route 4, Newton, and one grandson,
Claude Hauge of Route 4, Newton.
Mr. Miller is also survived by two sisters, Mrs.
Clara Brock of Newton and Mrs.
Elmer Emmack of Metz, and a brother, Clarence I. Miller
of Metz, while Mrs. Miller is also survived by a sister,
Mrs. C. C. Bruce of Route 4, Newton. Mrs. Miller's brother,
William A. Johnson, and a son, Donald, preceded her in

Donald T. Miller, Former Metz Boy,
Dies Early Today
Metz Aug 30 - Special to the Daily News - Donald T.
Miller, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. MT Miller died this morning
at Woodward, Ia. where he has been a patient in a sanitarium
for a number of years.
He died at 4:00 o'clock this morning from pneumonia. His
parents and sister, Bertha, had been with him since last
Friday, having received word of his illness on Thursday.
Mr. Miller, an invalid most of his life, was born at Metz.
Besides his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Bertha
of Metz and Mrs. Theona Hauge of Phoenix, Ariz.
Definite funeral arrangements have not been made but the
body will be brought to Newton and the services will
probably be held Friday afternoon. ~ The Daily News, August
