Darrel Matheny Is Killed On Okinawa Word was received her Tuesday by Theodore Matheny that his brother, staff Sgt. Darrell D. Matheny, 22, had been killed in action on Okinawa on June 2. Sergeant Matheny had made his home with his brother for the past 13 years, after the death of his parents. He graduated from Newton High School in 1941 and entered the service in October, 1942. He received his training at Camp Adair and at Camp White in Washington, being shipped overseas in August, 1944. At the time he was killed, he was stationed with the infantry on Okinawa. Sergeant Matheny is survived by one sister, Mrs. Glen Temple, and three brothers, Theodore, Fred of Reasnor and Normie, at home. Before entering the service he was employed at the local Super Market. ~ Newton Daily News, June 28, 1945.

Obituary - Betty Lou Matheny METZ -- Betty Lou Matheny, 2 1/2 year old child of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Matheny of Metz, died Sunday at 8:20 a.m. following a brief illness of purpura hemorrhagica. The disease is characterized by an effusion of the blood into surrounding tissues from its proper vessels. Funeral services were conducted from the Metz church Tuesday at 2 p.m. and interment was in the Sugar Grove cemetery at Metz. The child, born Feb. 28, 1934, had been ill only a short time before her death, her condition becoming serious Saturday night. The mother was Thelma Engle before her marriage. Surviving relatives include the parents; the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Engle and a maternal great grandfather, Andrew Engle, of near Metz and her paternal grandfather and great grandfather, Elijah Matheny and Theodore Matheny both of Newton. She is also survived by two aunts, Lucy Engle and Mrs. Glen Temple of Newton, and five uncles, Fed Engle, jr., Gail Engle, Fred Matheny, Darrell Matheny and Normie Lee Matheny. ~ Jasper County Record, October 29, 1936, page 6, column 2. |

Iowa METZ -- Funeral service for Sandra Marie, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Matheny, was held at the Metz church Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. Clyde McDonald of Des Moines in charge. A duet "I'll be a Sunbeam for Him" was sung by two little girls, Dena and May Schrum, and another duet, "Jewels" by John Hitchler and Mrs. Roy Baty. Pallbearers were four little boys, Harold Engle, George Voverka, Donald Adams and Robert Carpenter. Interment was in the Sugar Grove cemetery. An original poem "Our Baby" was read by the great grandfather, Andrew Engle. Sandra Maria Matheny was born August 20, 1940, and died Sept. 8. ~ Jasper County Record, September 19, 1940, page 4, column 3. |
