Mrs. Fred Engle Dies Thursday

Mrs. Fred a. (Elizabeth) Engle, 79, a lifelong resident of the Metz community died at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at her home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Johnson Chapel. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Fred Engle Jr., of Marshalltown and Gail Engle of Rt. 3, Newton; two daughters, Mrs. Theodore (Thelma) Matheny and Mrs. Morris (Lucie) Wing, both of Metz; 14 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

She also is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Emma Engle, Mrs. Homer Clement and Mrs. Hilma Dammeier, all residents of Jasper County.

The daughter of S.P. Lind and Emma Anderson Lind, Mrs. Engle was born Sept. 6, 1884 in Metz and attended Metz schools. She was married to Fred A. Engle March 4, 1903 at Mitchellville.

Mr. and Mrs. Engle observed their 61st wedding anniversary this year. Mrs. Engle was a member of the Lutheran Church, Sugar Grove Grange and Helping hand Club. ~ Newton Daily News, 1964

Married Today

Fred A. Engle and Miss Lizzie Lind, both of Metz, were married in Mitchellville this afternoon at four o'clock. They will leave next Monday for Ft. Scott, Kansas, near where they will take charge of a 400 acre farm belonging to Dr. Perry Engle of this city.

The groom is a son of Andrew Engle and the bride a daughter of S. P. Lind. They are both worthy young people and will go away with the best wishes of many friends. ~ Newton Daily Herald, March 4, 1903. 

Fred Engle, 87, Plowing Contest Founder, Dies

Fred A. Engle, 87, RR 2, Newton, one of the founders of the state plowing contest, and longtime resident of Jasper county, died at 8:50 p.m. Saturday at his home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson Funeral Chapel.

The Rev William Sexton, minister of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate and burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Today.

Surviving are two sons, Fred of Marshalltown and Gail of Baxter; two daughters, Mrs. Theodore (Thelma) Matheny of Newton and Mrs. Lucie Wing of Newton; 14 grandchildren; and two great-great-grand children.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1964, two brothers and a sister.
