I am certain that when Achsah Brown Clough bought this diary for 60 cents in 1886, she did not anticipate it's contents made available to  the world electronically.

In fact she most likely did not envision me  and  my generation specifically as relatives of hers, however I believe she had thoughts of her great great grand children, which I am fortunate to be one of.

I am sharing this with you to authenticate my history, not that it needs it, but in the field of genealogical research, these authentictions bear value and weight as lending credibility to research findings; as in my family line, the Brown-Clough Connection.

Due to the shear magnitude of entry effort, the plan is to bring to you a week or two  of diary entries at a time.  You will want to bookmark this page to return to for sequential reading.

Overview

Achsah Brown Clough, born April 13th, 1828, to William Brown and Lurana Simmons Brown;  was going into her 59th year at the outset of this diary.  As this diary indicates, she was not having too rough go of life as she was in demand of helping others.  She did, as the diary progressed run into some tough times, which could be due to age,  or due to a troublesome family situation(s) or both.  She was a compassionate person, who was in touch with her limitations and in this particular year, she met with illness so bad, I assume she had little or no energy to keep vigilant with her diary.  At first glance I ran into little or no reference to Freeman Clough, her husband and father of her children which raises investgatory questions if 1) were they in fact still married and 2) where was Freeman Clough (he died in 1903 in Canada), and 3) what was his role in the family of eight children.  The Freeman Clough family moved from  Providence RI to Chicago IL, to Hillsdale Michigan (gathered from the birth records), but this diary takes place some 19 years after the birth of their last child, Walter Scott Clough and 15 years after his death(age 4).
