Tuesday, March 1 -- Mrs Smith came home today. I went in to see Nell Brown a few minutes and called on Mrs. Story. Then came over to Jennys, glad enough to get home once more, wish I had a steady home, and could stay in it, found LuLu gone up to Nell Cloughs shall be glad when she settles on something to do. |
Wednesday, March 2 -- Did my washing this morning then went to bed and slept till dinner time. Jenny went down town in the afternoon, I slept, read, and knit some. The day has seemed long and lonesome, find myself in a dreary condition unless at work, or have Lulu with me for company. Hope she will get something to do soon, so we can be together all the time. |
Thursday, March 3 -- Went down town with Jenny this morning, bought some ready made underclothing. Got a letter from Hattie, she still wants us to come there wish I knew what was best for us to do, But feel as if Lulu and I ought to live independent of any of our friends, as they all have as much as they can do to get along themselves and we prefer staying here. |
Friday, March 4 -- Lulu and Jenny went down town to day. Lulu went to see Mr. Manch about working in the printing office. I have not much faith that she will ever do much at it, but do not want to discourage her in any undertaking, only hope she may be able to earn something at it, and feel as if she had something to do in the world for herself. |
Saturday, March 5 -- Lulu and I both worked for Jenny, all day, I wanted to go to Nellies, but it was a dreary stormy day, so staid at home and sewed, on sheets and pillow cases, mended up some things, took our baths and so on. Lu finished up her fancy work, am glad she could do so much for Jenny, I ought to have written some letters today but have not. |
Sunday, March 6 -- Went down to Free Baptist church this morning, then took the motor, and went out to Nellies, and spent the afternoon with her. Poor Scott, would not come in the room all the afternoon. Hates himself worse than me. Went to Jennys church in the evening, found her and Lulu there. no writing don today, and not much reading. |
Monday, March 7 -- Lulu went to her new work this morning, Jenny went down town, I helped the girl wash, as we had so many dirty clothes. In the afternoon, wrote Hattie then helped Jennie on her sewing, making aprons pillow cases etc. Lulu tired when she came home but thinks she will like her work. |
Tuesday, March 8 -- Felt so tired this morning after yesterdays washing, then it rained, and was such a dreary day. I ironed some, sewed some, and knit some, and in the afternoon took a nap, too stupid for any use. Lulu came home early and we had a nice time in the evening, so glad we can be together nights, glad she has work. |
Wednesday, March 9 -- Finished up our ironing, and sewed what I could on Jennys work. This was Lulu Poirltways[sp?] birthday, I gave her a napkin ring, and we all helped to entertain her in the evening, played, sung, told stories, and various kinds of amusements, had oranges, ice cream, cake etc. all very nice. |
Thursday, March 10 -- Sewed in the forenoon. In the afternoon went to look for rooms. O it is such tedious work one is too high price, another too small or too dark or something. Got a letter from Will Dean, glad to hear Alice is more comfortable, I wrote him, also Annie and Brother William, sent Lurana five dollars. |
Friday, March 11 -- Lulu home, sick to day. Got a card from Hattie. Ralph sick again and Hattie tired out, lonesome, and discouraged, wish I lived near her, but cant afford to go to her as there is no work for me out there. Wish I knew just what I ought to do, and just where I ought to go. |
Saturday, March 12 -- Lulu better to day, so she worked lots on our afghan, glad we are getting it near done. I cleaned up our room and helped Jenny on her sewing. Laura Sikes here all day. Lulu Poiekzway nearly sick, and out of humor. The snow is fast melting off, making it almost impossible to get out. |
Sunday, March 13 -- I went to church this morning with Arthurs folks, Lulu did not feel able to got out Nellie and Harry came over in the afternoon, missed their way, and was very cold and tired when they got here. N wants to do something to earn some clothes, it makes my heart ache, to see her out looking so shabbily Lu went to church in the evening. |
Monday, March 14 -- did our washing this morning, ripped up my silk skirt, After dinner went down town, sent Hattie a package a skirt, pair of towels, pattern and some trimming. Went over to Nell Browns, called at Mrs. Smiths, then went over to Mrs Hennesseys, staid to ten, came home alone in the evening, and was afraid, think I will not be out after dark again. |
Tuesday, March 15 -- Went shopping with Jenny, then went hunting rooms again, found some which seemed comfortable, for ten dollars a month, on Hawthorne one -- went up to Mrs Huttons to dinner. Lulu went up to Nellies to stay all nights, Jenny and Arthur out in the evening, it seemed quite lonely, but I read, and wrote, in the quiet. |
Wednesday, March 16 -- Lulu and I went again to look at the rooms, think we shall like them, and decided to take them for the summer. Shall be glad to live down town, near Lulus work, to avoid the long rides in the cars. Mrs. Van dressmaking for Jimmine to day, I worked all day on Nells Sofa pillow, felt tired after yesterdays tramp. |
Thursday, March 17 -- Heard Nellie was going to move, so went up to try and help her, carried up the pillow, she was very much pleased with it. |
Friday, March 18 -- Went up to Nellies again helped them get moved in their house, but it is so dirty, it makes me homesick. When I came home to night, found the woman had disappointed me about the rooms, decided not to let them. O dear! what can I do next? wonder if it is not right, for me to stay in Minneapolis, wish I knew what I ought to do |
Saturday, March 19 -- Went down town hunting rooms again, ran around till I was tired out. Then went out to Nells, and engaged room, and board with them, for the present, till we can see what arrangements we can make more permanently. Walked home in the afternoon, and was just tired out, lay down awhile ate supper, bathed, went to bed. |
Sunday, March 20 -- Cold and disagreeable out and I felt miserable so staid in and wrote Hattie[,] Annie and Clara. Lulu went up to Stevens Ave - Church, staid with Miss Bates to dinner. After she came home we made maple candy. Arthur went away to Duluth to night. I feel some rested, but it seems queer not to go to church morning and evening. |
Monday, March 21 -- did a big washing, and part of the ironing, packed up our trunks ready to move, it seems lonesome to be picking up again, feel as if I had no home. Have enjoyed the winter here, passed many pleasant days in my room alone. Lulu went up to Nellies to night. |
Tuesday, March 22 --Finished my ironing, then went up to Nellies, with the man that moved my things. Partly unpacked but was so tired left off before night and went down stairs to help Nellie. Am afraid so many in the family will make the work too hard for her, must try to help her what I can but feel about used up myself. |
Wednesday, March 23 -- Quite a snow storm in the night, it seems as if spring never would come, finished putting away my things, and swept up my room, it looks quite like home again, think I shall feel contented if I get rested, and find Nell does not have to work too hard on account of our being here. Lulu went to a part, did not get home till near twelve. |
Thursday, March 24 -- I felt so miserable this morning did not try to help Nell but went up stairs to bed and slept. After dinner helped her iron, hemmed a table cloth and took care of baby some. Lulu went out to prayer meeting in the evening, but it was so cold snowy, and dreary I did not feel like going so staid at home and read. |
Friday, March 25 -- Helped Nell all the forenoon as the baby is sick today, after dinner went down town, go me a white spread, and some napkins, bought some dishes and tin ware for Nell, cant help spending money for her, when I see her so pinched for the commonest necessities, cold and dreary weather. |
Saturday, March 26 --Baby real sick, and one of us has to tend him all the time, I worked around the house all day, and am dreadfully tired to night. Lulu came home early from her work and went out to tea, was out all evening. A letter from Hattie troubles me, she sent money for my fare out to Chaelron [sp?] but I dont feel ready to go. |
Sunday, March 27 -- I went down town to church staid to S.S. [Sunday School]. Lulu and Nell went to Stevens Ave church, Mr Poublee preached his first sermon for SA church [Stevens Ave church] today. |
Tuesday, March 29 -- Found the baby very sick, and had to be up with her most of the night. Mr and Mrs M nearly tired out, as she has been sick several days, and Mrs M is so frightened about her if anything ails her. She seemed very sick all day but Dr says we need not be at all alarmed about her. |
Wednesday, March 30 -- Baby had another very bad night, but seems a little better this morning. Mrs M quite sick to day, took cold and is tired out. I thought of Hattie so much last night, while up with baby, poor girl has been alone so many nights with Ralph this winter and he very sick I think she has had a hard time. |
