Anna Maria and Maria Apolonia Kronenberger - Latin Church Records

Introduction

Background Information

Burial Record and Translation

Baptismal Record and Translation

Translation Program Data

Introduction - The Latin church records were located in a microfilm published by Bowling Green State University, Center for Archival Collectins.  The microfilm is listed here.  The handwriting is fairly readable.  Comparisons with nearby records, written by the same person, lead me to believe the Latin text below is reasonably correct.  I have never studied Latin, so I claim no skill in doing the translation.  My translations may be off quite a bit.  If the reader wishes to correct or clarify the translation, please drop me a line at .

Background Information - Anna Maria Kronenberger was born 18 Mar 1849, in Bucyrus, Crawford County, Ohio.  She was the sixth of eight children born to Andrew Kronenberger and Appolonia Uhl.  She married Joseph Seibert on 24 Oct 1876 in Crawford County, Ohio.  Joseph was born in or near Darmstadht, Hesse, in present-day Germany, in 1842.

In 1880, they lived in Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio, with a 5-year old adopted daughter Mary. Joseph was a soap maker at the time.  An examination of the census record shows something rather curious.  Mary is given a last name Senz.  There is a Mary Sens, born in 1874, who is the daughter of Cornelia (Anna Maria's younger sister) Kronenberger and Frederick Sens.  This Mary Sens appears in the Bucyrus, Crawford County, OH census with her family.  One possible explanation is that Mary Sens had been staying with Anna Maria & Joseph Seibert around the time the census taker stopped by, and a neighbor provided the family information, thinking Mary was adopted.  Further research will be needed to discover just who Mary Senz is.

Anna Maria was the mother of Maria Apolonia Seibert, born 28 Feb 1884.  Anna Maria died on 6 March 1884, and was buried on 8 March 1884.  Maria Apolonia was baptised on 7 March 1884, and died shortly thereafter, on 20 March 1884.  Maria Apolonia was buried with her mother in Holy Trinity Cemetary, Bucyrus, Crawford County, Ohio.  It is not known what happened to Joseph Seibert, nor the adopted daughter Mary.

The background information was put together from the following sources:  1) Anna Maria and Maria A Kronenberger headstone in Holy Trinity Cemetary, Bucyrus, Crawford County, OH.  2) Census extract from the 1880 United States Census and National Index CD set, published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  3) Cemetaries of Crawford County Ohio Volume I, published by the Crawford County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society.  4) Marriages of Crawford County Ohio, published by the Crawford County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society.  5) Holy Trinity Catholic Church records, microfilm series MS-424 roll 1, section 1 page 11 and section 7 page 4, published by Bowling Green State University, Center for Archival Collectins.  6)  Joseph Seibert & Family census information - National Archives 1880 census, series T9, roll 1062, page 344D; can also be found under page 20 line 32, Enumeration District 222, Mansfield, Richland County, OH.   6)  1880 Census of Crawford County, OH, published by the Crawford County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society.  I can provide copies of the sources to interested people.

Burial Record:  This burial record appears to be that of Anna Maria Kronenberger.  She may have gone by the name Maria, which would explain why both records shown on this page don't refer to her as Anna.  I am sure that "sacramentus refecta pie obit in Domino" has a much more elegant translation that what I put together.

1884 Die 8 Martu sepelivi Mariam Kronenberger,
useorem Joseph Seibert annos 35 natam.
Sacramentis refecta,
pie obit in Domino in Mansfield.
Causa mortis febris partus.

Maria Kronenberger was buried on 8 March 1884,
35 years old, beloved of Joseph Seibert.
She died in holiness and was resurrected in the Lord in Mansfield.
Cause of death was birth fever.

Baptismal Record:  This baptismal record appears to be that of Maria Apolonia Kronenberger.  Her mother had died the day before the baptism.  I believe the translation of "patrini fuere", which may also be "patrini suere", to godparents may be in error.  George Kronenberger may have been Anna Maria's older brother, born in 1847.  Apolonia Kronenberger may have been Anna Maria's mother.

1884 7 Marti baptizavi sub conditione
Mariam Apoloniam Seibert filiam legitimam
Josephi Seibert es Mariae Kronenberger
(mortua in puerperali febri) natam 28 Februaru.
Patrini fuere Georgius es Apolonia Kronenberger.

Maria Apolonia Seibert was born 28 Feb 1884,
the legitimate daughter of Joseph Seibert
and Maria Kronenberger (died of birth fever),
and was baptised on 7 Mar 1884. Her godparents
were George and Apolonia Kronenberger.

Translation Program Data:   I used the software program WORDS (Latin) version 1.97.  It is a free shareware program written by William Whitaker, PO Box 3036, McLean VA 22103 USA.  Here is a link to the program.  The program input was the Latin text above, the program output is provided below for the reference.
