The following material has been compiled to help sort out those with the surnames Pearl, Perrell, and related spellings. The original listing was revised in January 1987. It was revised again in September 1990 and December 2005. Some of the suggested connections are just guesses. They are included to assist the users and hopefully will not misdirect them. A * is included in front of the names of children when there is additional material is included later under their name. Unfortunately, I have not been able to check census records as completely as desired and a number of other possible sources have not been consulted. Thus, this manuscript is probably most appropriately considered to be a draft rather than a completed unit.

These notes were reviewed in December 2005 and some changes made. However, this was not a through review and seems to conflict with other on-line summaries.

**********Jeremiah PERRILL **********

The earliest census record I have of a PEARL/PERRILL/PERRELL in Kentucky is Jeremiah Perrill in Jefferson Co. 1790. He may be the son who is mentioned in the Frederick County Maryland will of Daniel Pearl dated 1774. Daniel mentions sons Basel, Joseph, Robert, and Jerimiah and daughters Sary and Ann Burgess and brother Basel. I have nothing further on Jeremiah. Other Pearls were apparently in Lincoln and perhaps Bracken Cos. KY by about 1790. They apparently came from Fauquier Co., VA or from that Pearl line. I know of no connection between the Maryland and the Virginia Pearl families but there may be one.

********** George PEARLE **********

By 1810, at least eight families of Pearl/Perrill and related spellings are in the census, several from Lincoln and Rockcastle Cos., several from Bracken and Nicholas Co., and George from Nelson Co. George appears to be the parent of several and perhaps most of the families later found in Grayson Co. One would expect some connection to the Pearl lines in nearby Hardin Co. who may be either direct descendants of George or of some of his relatives who moved to the area because of his presence.
George and Polly Pearl are reported to be the parents of Thomas Pearl. If it is this one, obviously he had a wife names Polly or Mary.

... Notes: I seems unlikely the Thomas Purrell in Nicholas Co in 1810 is this individual unless he had a wife before 1808 and we have no record of the 4 children recorded then. What must be this Thomas in 1820 lists 3 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, and 1 female under 10. In 1830 he is listed with 2 males 10-14, 2 males 15-19, 1 female under 5, 2 females 5-9, and 1 female 15-19 .... Children:

... Notes: It seems likely he is the son of either Jeremiah PERRILL who is listed in Jefferson Co in 1789 tax roll or of the George Pearle of Nelson Co 1810. The oldest male in the household is over 45 and might be the father Jeremiah or another George, father of this one. That possible older George might be the son of Thomas Perrell and grandson of Robert PEARL of Frederick County, Maryland. The will of Robert PEARL is dated 3 Sept 1765. Robert mentions sons Daniel, James, Basell, Charles, and Thomas and daughters Ann Marshall and Cathrin Dean. Thomas Perrell whose wife was Sarah had a will in Frederick County, Maryland, dated 6 Oct 1775, proved 15 Feb 1776, that lists sons George and Thomas and younger ones Joseph and John. The daughters were Elizabeth Cheney, Shany Machelfish, Ann Jasper, and Sarah, Rachel, and Mary Perrell. I have found other instances where the surnames Pearl and Perrell are used for the same family.

A bicentenniel edition of the Leitchfield Gazette has an article about early Rock Creek families states that William PEARL, husband of Elizabeth CASH was the son of a banker of Nashville, TN and that during the Civil War, the bank was robbed and some of the family killed. William ran for his life to Kentucky and never heard from any of the family again. His native surname might not have been PEARL. Robert H PEARL / PERREL, a farmer, is in Grayson Co., KY as early as 1830 and is there in 1850 with a family which includes a John W., age 15 who seems to fit into the rest of the family in terms of age. John W. was not with Robert in the 1860 census of Grayson County and I failed to find him in my scan of the records. By then, he should have been married and perhaps had a daughter. It seems unlikely that Robert would have moved to Nashville and become a banker after 1860. A Dyer PEARL, born ca 1794 lived in Nashville as early as 1820 and in the 1850 census is listed as a broker but that might have been a misreading of banker. His first wife died in 1838 which would have been just a few years after the birth year of John William PEARL. There are two apparent sons of Dyer: William Ellery PEARL who was born 8 July 1827, was also a broker in Nashville in 1850 and who died 27 Dec 1854, and Elbridge G. PEARL, born about 1825, with William in 1850, still in Nashville in 1860 but in New York City by 1880. Although Dyer died 10 Aug 1865, I see no other reason to think he was the father of a John or William PEARL of Grayson Co., KY or to think that a John or William was in Nashville in 1865. Unfortunately, I was unable to obtain newspapers of that time which might have verified part of the story.

Pearl born ca 1824 in the 1850 Federal Census of Kentucky Daviess Co., Owensboro twp. p 346, res 13, with Edward LAMBDEN age 61 born Maryland, who is a dentist but no family is shown. A Francis M Pearl was named administrator of the estate of Sarah C. Pearl 15 Feb 1853 Daviess Co. It is possible that Sarah is the wife of Thomas but that does not seem likely as Thomas was still alive at that time.

The first census record of a PERRILL / PEARL in Hardin Co that I am aware of is Doran in 1820, p 56. In 1830 there is Dorey, p 384, James (1788?), p 377, and Polly, perhaps a widow, p 380. In 1840 there are two named James (1788 and 1810), p 27 and 53, a John, p 86 and a John M. (1815) p 28, Theodore (1818), p 52, and Thomas (1818), p 53. It seems most likely that the above John M is the son of Margaret PERRILL Sr. James (1810), Thomas (1818)and Margaret (1818)... children of James (1788) would include John M. (1815)
