Johann Els (c1820-1909), a fisherman on the Elbe River, Cumlosen, Germany.

Johann Els, c1820-1909

When I was a child my grandfather would tell me that his grandfather was a fisherman on the Elbe River in Germany... I am sorry that I did not insist on and listen for more. That story from my grandfather, a handful of letters written in Old German, and many old photos, mostly un-named, are the beginning of my search for my great-great grandparents who lived in Cumlosen, West Priegnitz, Potsdam, Prussia.

Catharine Marie Wendt (c1820-1909), Cumlosen, Germany.

Catharine Marie Wendt, c1820-1909

This is the only picture that I have of my great-great-grandmother. From the translated last will and testament of Johann and Catharine Marie Els, Wittenberge, August 26, 1908, I know that she was married before her marriage to Johann Els to a Ludke, first name unknown. The will listed Emilie Ludke, married to "the Cobbler" Heinecke of Wentdorf and their children. It listed Marie Els living in Altona and married to the teacher, Gerant. It listed the farmer, Heinrich Els, living near Milheim near Brenham, State of Texas, America. Heinrich, Henry as he was called in America, was my great-grandfather.
...more to come...
