SEIFERT

Family Page

page established January 13, 2007

Like many family histories, the SEIFERT family has been a genealogy puzzle with many missing pieces.  Joyce Godfrey started with only the surname of SEIFERT for her maternal great-great-grandmother.  Jay Willis' maternal great-great-great-grandmother was Dorthea "Dolly" SEIFERT.  David Seifert had possession of an early 20th century SEIFERT family tree, but knew little about where the family lines went from there.  Other SEIFERT descendants had information on their particular lines of the family.

Joyce and Jay met online researching the SLOYER family.  They found it rather amazing how often the SLOYER and SEIFERT families came together in marriage.  In 2002, Linda Klosek published 250 Years Of The Sloyer - Schloyer - Schleyer - Schleier Family, 1752-2002.  In her book was a picture of the David W. Seifert family, and when Joyce saw the face of Stella Seifert as a young girl it looked very similar to her great-grandmother's face.

Joyce, Jay, and David have actively been researching the SEIFERT family history together since April 2003.  Using the SEIFERT family tree, church records, census records, obituaries, cemetery visits, online genealogy boards, and subsequent family contacts we have put together the following information. We have tried very hard to be as accurate as we can be using source based genealogy; however, we do not claim to be perfect, our research may contain some mistakes.  We would welcome corrections and additional information, and we hope our research will add to other family history.

Our first documented SEIFERT in the American colonies was Johannes SEIFERT. The following is from David Seifert research "Pennsylvania German Pioneers" by Strassburger and Hinke includes several possible Johannes Seiferts, but the most logical seems to be a Johannes Seyfarth who arrived on the ship "Brothers", William Muir, Captain, on the 16th of September 1751. I believe that this is the Johannes that started this Seifert clan because that ship had several future neighbors of his, such as J. Jacob Ziegenfuss,  and J. Jacob Ahlem. Also, a history of the Seiferts, written by George M. Seifert (1856-1943) indicates that Johannes arrived within 2 years of his brothers, Adam and Phillip, one settling in Warren County, NJ and the other in Berks County, PA. They arrived in 1749. I have been unable to pinpoint the exact town that Johannes came from, but separate information says either Wuerttemberg, Alsace, or Hohenzollern."
