This site is devoted to the study of my HICKIN family which, during the 19th and 20th centuries, was firmly rooted in London.
My interest in genealogy began when my father died in 2001 and I realised that I knew hardly anything about his family.
Since the autumn of 2003, I have made considerable progress in my discoveries and a summary of what I have learned is presented here.
Nearly all of my research so far has been into my father's family. My mother's family, being Irish, has so far daunted me though someday I will venture into Irish genealogy.
The majority of the ancestors I have found so far originated in London and all of my knowledge of them is from references to original sources, in the form of certificates, censuses and parish registers, with some vital gaps filled through my contact with Donovan J. Murrells of the Murrell(s) Family History Society. The exception to this rule is the line dealing with the SIMS and BRANN families of Kent, where most of my knowledge has come from Paul Allen, to whom I am very grateful.
The HICKIN name can be something of a burden to those who carry it, but I have discovered that there are a lot more of us than I thought. One day this research could turn into a 'one-name study'. As far as I know no such project exists, and then we may be able to discover whether or not we are all related, as many people with this surname seem to believe, although I suspect that we will not.
Feel free to contact me if you have an interest in this surname, or any of the other surnames on this site, for that matter.
These pages are dedicated to the memory of my mother and father.
