Barbara A Clarke (nee Lane) family history.

John Meader married Elizabeth Shapton on the 19th April 1682 at Feniton, Devon. Elizabeth had been christened at Frithelstock, Devon on the 28th March 1667. Frithelstock is near the West Coast of Devon about eight miles west of Torrington. Feniton and Whimple are about fifteen miles northeast of Exeter, Devon.
All of these towns are only a short distance from those of the Parnell ancestors of Devon.

John and Elizabeth had at least five children, born at Whimple, Devon. - John (b/c) 1st January 1684, Mary (b/c) 30th November 1686, Johan and Alice (b/c) 10th February 1688, George (b/c) 14th May 1695.

John, born 1684, the son of John and Elizabeth Shapton, married Alice Tibbs on the 26 December 1703 at Swanage, Dorset.
Their son John was (b/c) at Swanage on the 12th February 1706, daughter Elizabeth 2nd August 1711.

John Meader (1706) the son of John and Alice married Elizabeth Sidbury at Studland, Dorset on the 20th March 1727.
Peter was (b/c) 26th December 1728, Betty (b/c) 16th January 1730, Thomas (b/c) 10th July 1736 at Swanage.

Thomas MEADER (1736) the son of John and Elizabeth Sidbury married Lucy BAILY on 4th January 1761 in St. Laurence, Thanet, Kent.
The children were - Elizabeth (b/c) 8th November 1761, John (b/c) 2nd December 1764, Thomas (b/c) 16th March 1766, James (b/c) 15th November 1767, Mary (b/c) 8th October 1769, Joseph (b/c) 22nd September 1771.

Joseph MEADER (1771) the son of Thomas and Lucy, was born 22nd September 1771 in St. Lawrence, Thanet, Kent.
He married Elizabeth ERRIDGE on 3rd December 1793 in St Mary's the Virgin, Dover, Kent.
The children were - Joseph (c) 5th October 1794, Thomas (c) 25th May 1796, James (c) 6th May 1798, Elizabeth (c) 19th January 1800, Mary (c) 21st April 1801, Lucy (c) 9th October 1803, Ann (c) 29th 1805, Charles (c) 20th December 1807, John (b) 30th December 1809 (c) 28th January 1810, Joanna (c) 19th July 1812, Joanna (c) 19th February 1815.
Lucy was christened at Ramsgate, Kent, the other children at Saint Laurence, Thanet, Kent. The extended Meader family owned several lodging properties in Ramsgate over many years.

ISLE of Thanet: -Thanet is the site of a number of popular beach resorts, including Margate, Broadstairs, Ramsgate, and Minster.

John MEADER the son of Joseph and Elizabeth born 1809 died 6th May 1899 at 3 Buckland Street Alexandria, Sydney.

John (1809) married Mary (Margaret) McMahon on 15th October 1842 in St. Mary's Church, Sydney.
John and Mary had 6 children - John and Annie (twins) (b. 10/4/1847), Edward, James, Harriett and William J. (b.1861).

John was a brickmaker by calling. On the 29th December 1831 he was convicted of house breaking and received a sentence of ten years and transportation to Australia. He was five feet five and a quarter inch tall, ruddy and freckled complexion with sandy brown hair grey eyes, and tattoos of anchors on his arms. He was transported on the "Clyde" and sent to work under his master Thomas Cowper at Ballalaba, between Braidwood and Captains Flat NSW.
John received a ticket of leave on the 2nd. October 1837, and his "Certificate of Freedom" No 42/583 on the 17th April 1842.

The McMahon family.

John McMahon married Mary. Mary was born in Ireland. They had a child, Michael born in 1806.

Mary (Margaret) McMahon was born 1825 in Clare, Ireland and arrived in Sydney 21st February, 1842 on the "Nabob", with her parents, as Bounty Scheme passengers, from Ennis in the county of Clare, Ireland. She was a house servant, and could read. She died 4th July 1865 in Kent St. Sydney and was buried 6th July 1865 in the RC Cemetery Rookwood.
Marriage Details: - The Minister was Patrick Andrew Hogan. The Witnesses were Michael McMahon and Patrick and Mary Considine, all of Sussex Street Sydney. All parties signed with their marks.

Michael McMahon the son of John and Mary was born 1806 in County Clare, Ireland.
Michael married Mary MULLINS Abt. 1840 in Ireland. Mary was a daughter of Edmund and Catherine. Michael died in 1874.
Michael and Mary had 6 children - Edward (b.1823), Mary (Margaret) (b.1825), Michael (b. 29/9/1828), Catherine (b. 10/8/1832), Ellen (b. 10/4/1834), Thomas (b. 10/8/1838). Mary died in Sydney in 1872.

Michael and Mary departed Liverpool 9th September 1841 on the 503 ton Barque; named the "Nabob" she was 112ft. long with a Beam of only 26-ft. On board were their four children and three young ladies under their protection. They were Mary Doeherty 21yrs. old from Galway, Mary Ward was 20 from Galway and Bridget Devery 24, also from Galway. The McMahons paid a total seventy three-pound, even though they were bounty passengers. On the 16th October 1841 the "Nabob" docked at Madeira for two days, then at Cape of Good Hope for five days. There were 216 immigrants on board. The voyage took a total of 164 days.
The Surgeon's report lists some interesting details in his report.
Question. Did the vessel prove desirable for the conveyance of passengers?
Answer. Not one of the best.
Q. Point out defects in quality of accommodations.
A. The hospital was too close to the "perch can" so he could not use it for three-quarters of the voyage.
Q. What occupations and amusements were provided?
A. Music, singing, dancing, the men played hunt the slipper, and leapfrog, etc.
Q. Was the conduct of any of the Immigrants, (particularly the single women), such to give reason to doubt their eligibility as Bounty Immigrants? - If so, name them.
A. I was informed that the second mate was in the hospital with Elizabeth Mitchell (21single), Catherine Brogan was watching at the door. On going down I saw Elizabeth but not the Second mate, who had hid himself the circumstances look suspicious. One male was reported over a wine cask incident and was given bail.
Q. Was a school established?
A. Yes. In the beginning 30-40 scholars, lately 16-20, no adults.
Daily Rations: - Bread. 3/4 lb. Pork, beef, fish or herring. 3/4 lb. Coffee. 112 oz. Tea. 2 SP. Sugar. 1- 1/2 oz. Flour. 1/2 lb. 3 days. Water. 6 pints a week.

The ship arrived in Sydney with one hundred and thirteen males and one hundred three females. On the voyage, nineteen persons died seventeen of these were children under seven yrs. All but one of these children died of dysentery, the other from Croup. One adult from Dropsy, one from Matter in the head. Two boys and six girls were born on the voyage-. The shipmaster was Capt. Fred K Wilson.

The Brett family.


James BRETT married Susan (Unknown). They had a son James born Abt. 1824 in Essex.

James BRETT (1824) the son of James and Susan, married Susan HAMMOND in 1847 at Manuden, Essex, UK. Susan was born in Manuden in 1823 and was a daughter of William Hammond and Elizabeth Nottage.
James and Susan arrived in Australia on the "Plantagenet" in 1857. He was 23yrs. old, she was 31 from Hertfordshire. They were unassisted passengers, as they paid one pound and worked their passage.
Susan died 30th December 1898 at The Boulevard, Strathfield from Chronic Enteritis, Cerebral Haemorrhage and was buried 2nd Jan 1899 in St. Thomas Cemetery Enfield.
The children of this marriage were - Emma (b. 1849), Clara (b.1852), Henry William, (b.1855), Elizabeth (b.1858), James (b. June, 1861), Mary J. (b.1863), Eliza Susan (b.1866), Priscilla (b.1868).

Henry William BRETT was born 1855 in Essex, UK and arrived in Australia on the "Plantagenet" with his parents. He died 28th October 1943 at 37 Hillard St. Lakemba from Mycard. Arterio Sclerosis and was buried 30th October 1943 in St. Thomas Cemetery Enfield. Henry married Jane SMITH on 1st July 1876 in Enfield, Sydney.
Jane's parents were :-
Her father Sidney SMITH was born 1835 in Bristol, UK. He married Jane LOUDON on 29th January 1856 at Cooks River, Sydney. Jane LOUDON was born 1831 in Magherafelt, Derry, Ireland.

The name "Loudon" is taken from her son's death cert. The spelling "Louden" is taken from the birth cert. of her daughter Jane. The informant was her spouse Sidney Smith. Her name was shown as "Lowden" on her marriage cert. At that time neither of the couple could read or write. Marriage details: - Bridesmaid, Elizabeth Kairns, Best-man, John Hart.

Sidney SMITH and Jane LOUDEN had 5 children - Jane 8/12/1856 Glebe, Fanny 1858 Chippendale, born in Braidwood were Elizabeth 1860, Ann 1862, Robert 1864- d.5/9/1881.
Sidney was a gold miner while in Braidwood and was a brewer, living at 14 Chippen Street Sydney at the time of Robert's death.

Henry Brett and Jane Smith. Henry was a labourer. He arrived in Australia with his parents in 1857. In 1878 he owned the freehold at 10 Highgate St Strathfield. Jane Smith was born at 203 Cowper St. Glebe, on the 8th December 1856.
Henry and Jane had 12 children - Charles H. (b. 1878), Walter William Brett (b. 11/6/1879), Ernest A. (b. 1881), Olive B. (b.1883), Gordon E. (b. 1885), Clara J. (b.1888), Stanley H. (b.1890), Cecil H. (b. 1892), Priscilla (b. 1893), Alice M. (b.1895), Sidney T. (b.1898), Robert R. (b.1900)

The Aaron family.

Charles AARON was born 1818 in Baghdad and arrived in Sydney, 29th March 1855. He died 5th August 1904 in Sydney and was buried in Rookwood. There is no evidence that Charles ever married Annie Meader.

Charles and Annie had nine children. - Charles (b.19th June 1867), Esther (b.1869 d.1871), Alfred (b.23rd Sept.1871), Esther (b.21st December 1873), Sarah (b.20th February 1876), Marks Mordecai (b.27 Jul.1878), Rachel (b.27th Nov.1880), Joseph (b.27th Apr.1883), Anna (Hannah) (b.7th Dec. 1886).

Charles arrived in Australia as Zaliah. His name was Zaliah Harun Nazum (Saleh Abaron Kbuzzum) (Charles Aaron) On the 8th September 1853 the 474 ton barque "Lord Ashley" departed Melbourne bound for Calcutta. Charles Aaron joined the ship in Calcutta. He was known as Saleh as referred to in the book "Eben Saphir" by Rabbi Jacob Saphir and an extract from the book "The Sephardim of Australia and New Zealand" by Aaron Aaron. (Descendant of Charles and his wife Rebecca).
Charles was listed as a Sea Cunnie (Steersmen in a vessel and usually associated with Lascars of the East Indies) Ref. 1867 Sailors Wordbook. By Admiral Smythe. The barque then set sail for Bristol,UK. It departed Bristol bound for Melbourne on the 7th November, 1854 with Charles, 32 other steerage, 2 passengers, and a cargo of Oats, Stoneware, Pipes and Tin. It arrived in Melbourne 20th February 1855 then departed Melbourne 20th March 1855 arriving in Sydney 29th March 1855; Saleh left the ship in Sydney. Charles' arrival in 1855 is also mentioned in the book 'Eben Saphir'.

1861 - 1866 Charles Aaron was the occupier of 378 Kent Street Sydney. He was a registered Pawnbroker at this address; Margaret and John Meader, Annie's parents, were also living at this address. Margaret died here in 1865.
1867 - 1868 Charles was the occupier 386 Kent Street. Pawnbroker.
1869-1889, 61 Druitt Street was located between what is now the Sydney Town Hall and Town Hall House. A footpath running North / South was directly behind the Town Hall extension site, then south of the footpath was a Joiners company, a yard, then Aaron's Livery Stables.
The property was leased by Charles from the owner Mr. Montague Levey contained a single level three roomed house, and Stables. In 1877 the Gross Annual value of the property was 60 pound. The Aaron family lived in this house.
1869 -1870 Charles and Annie were still the occupier's of 61 Druitt Street. He was listed as a Cab and Omnibus Proprietor. Miss Hegarty a Dressmaker also operated her business from this address.
1871 - 1881 He was listed as a Cab and Hackney Prop. Horse dealer and livery Stable Keeper.
Stage 1 of the new Town Hall was opened in February 1880; the opening of the completed Town Hall was not until November 1889.
1882 - 1889 He was listed as a Cab and Coach Prop. with no mention of Stables or Livery.
1889 - 61 Druitt Street was listed as Isaac Phizackerely Bicycle importer.
1897 - 1901 Charles, 624 Harris Street Draper.
1902 - 1903 Charles, 157 Jones Street.
1904 - 486 Harris Street- Mrs Annie Aaron was the registered occupier for one year only.
1908 - 1925 Mrs Annie Aaron was the registered occupier of 73 Abercrombie Street, west side between Levey and Myrtle streets.
1926 - the land was listed as vacant, and in 1926 was sold to Mrs B. Mallett.

Annie MEADER was (born 10th April 1847) in Braidwood, NSW and was baptised 22nd August 1847 in Goulburn. She died 2nd October 1924 at 73 Abercrombie Street, Sydney, from Arterial Sclorocis Cardiac Failure and was buried 3rd October 1924 in the RC section Rookwood. (Section 10 grave 1298). It is noted that no record of marriage is registered. Ref. 460330/94. Annie lived on a property called Jammy Cambeane. It is believed she was the first white woman born in Braidwood.

Charles and Annie Meader had a home and stables in Druitt Street, Sydney (see notes - Charles). It is reported that Annie would stand at the stable gate with her apron lifted up for the drivers to deposit the day's takings as they dismounted at the end of their shift. Another tale relayed through one of her grandchildren was that the daughters of Charles and Annie would steal the kidneys out of the sheep's carcases hanging outside the butcher shop along the street frontage where the Queen Victoria building now stands. Ralph LANE married Esther PAINTER. They had a son, George Alfred Lane (b.17th June 1881 in London).

George Alfred married Susan Daisy SWAISLAND on 24th April 1907 in Eastham, London. Susan's father was James SWAISLAND.
Susan was born 1882 in London, UK and immigrated in London. UK. Susan was 25 yrs. old and lived at 87 Wellington Rd. Eastham with her parents when she married George.
George and Susan had at least 5 children - George Alfred (b. 6/1/1908), Arthur (b. 1911), Elsie (b. 1914), Ralph (b.20th March 1916) and Thelma (b. 1921).

When George married Susan, he lived at 36 Streatfield / Strathfield Ave. Eastham with his parents, and gave his rank as a Fireman. George Alfred was a seaman in the Merchant Service. In 1910 George and Daisy immigrated to Australia with their son, and settled in the New South Wales town of Gunnedah. Other children born to George and Daisy in Australia were Arthur, Elsie, Ralph, Thelma, and two deceased. George was living at 200 Albany Rd Stanmore. Sydney when he died on the 8th September 1953. He was cremated at Woronora Crematorium.
Susan was also living at 200 Albany Rd. Stanmore, Sydney when she died in Rydalmere Hospital on the 8th May, 1962, Rests at Woronora Crematorium.

Walter William BRETT was born 11th June 1879 in Enfield, Sydney. He married Esther AARON on 31st August 1904 in St. Barnabas Church Sydney. Walter was an upholsterer from Strathfield. He died 4 Jun 1948 in Sydney. Buried at Garden 11. Section AA Woronora.

Esther AARON the daughter of Charles and Annie was born 21st December 1873 in Sydney. Esther was a Tailoress of 48 Abercrombie St. Sydney.
She died 18th March 1959 in Sydney. Grave ref: - same as Walter.
Marriage Details: - Minister William Apedaile Charlton. Bridesmaid was Walter's sister Olive, and the best man was C Bush.
Walter William and Esther Aaron had two children - Walter William (b. 1905) and Esther Annie Jane (b. 22/8/1908).

Walter William Brett Jnr. married Emily Goodman in 1929. Emily was born on (3rd Feb.1906).

George Alfred LANE was born 6th January 1908 in 90 Napier Rd. Eastham Essex, UK. He arrived in Sydney on the "Macedonia" Feb 1911. He died 12th November 1999 in Bexley from Chronic renal Failure, Diabetes and was buried 18th November 1999 in Woronora Crematorium. George married Esther Annie Jane BRETT on 7th March 1936 in St Pauls, Kogarah, Sydney.

George was a telephone operator in Gunnedah NSW as a young man and later a bricklayer, then a self employed carpet layer. He was a Sergeant in the Army during WW2. President and life member of the Rockdale Business Mens Club. Esther Annie Jane BRETT was born 22nd August 1908 in Sydney and was baptized 20th September 1908 in St. Pauls, Kogarah. She died 17th May 1984 in Prince of Wales, Randwick from Carcinoma Colon and was buried 21st May 1984 in Woronora Crematorium.
Esther married George at St. Pauls church Kogarah. She attended Burwood Girls High School; Esther was a very skilled dressmaker.
Esther rests at Woronora Crematorium. Garden 6KI(position 183).
Marriage Details, Minister - Alfred John Brand King. Witnesses: - Elsie Lane and Syd Turner.
George and Esther had two children - Brian Alfred (b. 5/12/1936) and Barbara Anne (b. 27/6/1938).

Brian Alfred LANE - born 5th December 1936 at Kogarah - died 4th February 1999. Brian married Shirley Ann SINNETT on 5th April 1959 at Maroubra. He commenced working as an Accountant at the age of 16 and followed this career all of his working life. Brian died at the age of 62 from Emphysema after a long illness.
Shirley - born July 1937 - died June 1974 at the age of 36 from a melanoma.
Brian and Shirley had three children - Fiona, Peter Matthew and Brian George.
Brian re-married in 1975 or 1976 to Coralie Helen BRENNAN - born 16th September 1939 and they had one child - Grant Alfred.

Barbara Anne LANE was born 27th June 1938 in Osterley Private Hospital, Kogarah and was baptised 18th October 1939 in St. Pauls Anglican Church, Kogarah.
Barbara was educated to Leaving Certificate level - then Ultimo Tech. in shorthand and typing.
Barbara married Norman William CLARKE, son of William Henry CLARKE and Thelma Violet HULBERT, on 1st February 1967 in the Soldier's Memorial Church, Kogarah.
Marriage details: - The Soldiers Memorial Presbyterian Church: Minister- Thomas Howie Turner; Bridesmaid - Pamela Ann Seaton; Best man - Robert Earl Pearce.
Barbara and Norman have two children - Tracy Jane Clarke born 1st November 1969 and Darren William Clarke born 27th November 1971.
