The history of the Scurlock Family of Pembrokeshire |

Parish records for Pembrokeshire are decidedly sketchy. What follows below is the history of the SCURLOCKs of Pembrokeshire, which have been put together,
to the best of my knowledge, from a variety of sources. The evidence collected has been used to produce the best fit of family groups. I welcome any comments or corrections that anyone visiting the site might be able to make.

This Joseph married Mary JONES by licence in Llangwm in 1788. I have been unable to find this licence. No record of it was found at
the National Library of Wales at Aberystwyth.
The first son of Joseph and Mary Scurlock was called Thomas and he was baptised at Llangwm shortly after the wedding in 1788.
Joseph and Mary had a number of children. In addition to Thomas baptised in 1788, there was William baptised 17th January 1790,
Peter baptised 1st January 1792, Margaret baptised in 1793, Benjamin baptised in 1795, John baptised in Llanstadwell in 1801 and possibly
Joseph baptised in Llanstadwell in 1803. Here there is something of a mystery. The baptismal register in Llanstadwell records Joseph as
the son of Joseph Scurlock and Lettice. However, no trace of a Lettice Scurlock has been found so it seems most likely that this was an error.
Joseph was most likely the son of Joseph Scurlock and Mary. Furthermore, the death of a Mary Scurlock did not take place in Llanstadwell until 1826.
Husband Joseph’s death is recorded in 1832. I have been told that Lettice was sometimes used as a family name for the more formal Elizabeth.
The only Joseph-Elizabeth marriage I know of was that in 1755 between Joseph of the previous generation and Elizabeth FURLONG.
There is another Scurlock baptism in Llanstadwell at this time which also provides a mystery. There is another Thomas Scurlock baptised in 1798
in Llanstadwell, this time to a Joseph Scurlock and Elizabeth. Is this another error in the register? Surely Joseph Scurlock senior and
Elizabeth Scurlock (nee Furlong) could not have had another child as late as 1798? I have not found another Joseph Scurlock living in Llanstadwell
and the surrounding area married to an Elizabeth within this timeframe. Perhaps the first Thomas died and this is a second Thomas born to
Joseph and Mary Scurlock.

Joseph Scurlock and family
The history of the SCURLOCK family begins about 1766, when Joseph SCURLOCK
was born, probably in Rosemarket, also known as Rhosemarket.
He was probably a son of Joseph Scurlock and Elizabeth FURLONG who married in Llanstadwell in 1755.
