He was born March 1841. He lived
in Jackson County during the 1850 census with his parents and
is also on the census of 1860 living with his parents Elijah and
Mary Cottrill. He married my Great
Grandmother Mary E Amelia Cottrill September 15, 1861 in Jackson
County, Virginia.
Grandfather Elijah was a farmer,
following the same occupation as his father. Then June 16, 1862
he was mustered into service in the Union Army at Ravenswood,
Virginia joining Company I, 11th Regiment, Virginia Infrantry,
later the 11th West Virginia Infrantry.
On June 30, 1862 his muster roll
has a remark that he was retained by the civil authorities at
Parkersburg, Virginia. Of course that makes him absent from muster
at that time.
He was present on the muster roll
until July and August 1863 where the remark says that he was on
scout. The next information says that he was accidently wounded
at Meadow Bluff May 31, 1864. May and June records show that he
was absent and in the hospital in Charleston, W. Va. July and
August 1864 again left sick at Liberty, Va. June 17, 1864.
November and December 1864 he was
again absent and the only remarks are Winchester, Va.
There is another remark that he
was also wounded by accident at Bergers Mills, W. Va. 22 May 1864.
So he must have been wounded twice.
His age when he entered the service
was 21 and his place of residence was Fishers Point, Jackson County,
W. Va.
His muster out date was 17 June
1865 at Richmond, Va.
