SCRIVEN RECORD 1899

Mrs. Mercy Scriven of Grafton, Rensellaer Co., N.Y. wrote her cousin, Mrs. Tacy Scriven Bigelow, who wrote up this record; that their grand-father William Scriven, who died about the year 1818 [Jan 1827], at the age of 99 years, 7 months, was one of three brothers who came from England about 1776. One of the brothers went to South Carolina. She does not know what became of the other. Mrs. Bigelow says "I believe I heard my grand-father's sister say he went back to England." [Westerly, Washington Co. Rhode Island town records show William Scriven as being born there on 6 Jun 1727 to James Scriven and Alice Knowles.]

William Scriven was twice married. He first married Mercy Lewis, sister of John Lewis. To them were born 10 children. James and John (twins), Joshua and Hannah (twins), William, Zebulon, Thomas, Joseph, Elsie, and Mercy. He married a second wife Mary Mosher, or Mosier, and had 4 children, Matthias, Benjamin, Phally [Elipha, also Sally], and Polly.

  1. James, son of William and Mercy Lewis Scriven, married Marvel Davis. They had 2 children; James D. and Marvel. His wife dying, he mourned for her fourty days and them married his wife's sister Comfort Davis. She died leaving no children.
  2. John, son of William and Mercy Lewis Scriven, married Elsie Crandall. This John is the father of Mercy Scriven above, who wrote this information for Mrs. Bigelow. They had 6 children: John, Thomas, Sally, Elsie, Susan, and Electa. He married a second wife, Eunice Worden or Wardon. They had 5 children: George, Fanny, Polly, Eunice, and Mercy. (This Mercy was over 80 years old when she wrote up this information in 1899. She married her cousin so her name was still Scriven.)
  3. Joshua, son of William and Mercy Lewis Scriven, married Mercy Chapman. They had 6 children. Joshua, Zebulon, Betsy, Mercy, Hannah, and Zipporah.
  4. Hannah, daughter of William and Mercy Lewis Scriven, married Theophilus Larabee. They had 2 children: Nathan and Hannah.
  5. William, son of William and Mercy Lewis Scriven, married Mary Saunders (daughter of Isaac Saunders), Mrs. Bigelow's great-grandparents. They had 6 children: William, (grandfather of Mrs. Bigelow), Isaac, Polly, two girls died in infancy, and Olive.
  6. Zebulon, son of William and Mercy Lewis Scriven, married Polly [Mary] West. They had no children.
  7. Thomas, son of William and Mercy Lewis Scriven, married Member [Remember] Crandall (sister of John's first wife Elsie). They had Meritt and Elsie. Elsie married Simon Moon of Petersburg, N.Y.
  8. Joseph, son of William and Mercy Lewis Scriven, married Nancy Lewis (daughter of Rev. Lewis). They had 5 children: Nathan, Nancy, Sally, Samuel, and Daniel L. He married, for his second wife, the widow Susan Smith.
  9. Elsie, daughter of William and Mercy Lewis Scriven, married Caleb Bassett. They had James, George, Polly, and Fanny. Fanny married Daniel Record, brother of James Record.
  10. Mercy, daughter of William and Mercy Lewis Scriven, married Silas Jones. They had William, Zebulon, Thomas, Silas, Polly, and Betsy.
  11. Matthias, son of William and Mary Mosher (William Scriven's second wife), married Anna Sabin. They had many children, [including] Tacy, Matthias, Benjamin, Stephen, Annis, Sabin, Amasa, Oliver {Gilbert}, Joseph, Eunice, Aaron, and several died in infancy.
  12. Benjamin, son of William and Mary {Mosher} Scriven, married Temperance Sabin (sister of Matthias' wife). They had many children, [including] Julian and Benjamin Henry.
  13. Phally [Elipha, also Sally], daughter of William and Mary Mosher Scriven, married Asa Larabee. Born to them: Mary, Betsy, Asa, and William. She married, for her second husband, Joseph Allen.
  14. Polly, daughter of William and Mary Mosher Scriven, lived to the age of 14 years, when she and her mother were burned to death. No particulars, except that the family record was burned, as they did not save any thing.

Mrs. Mercy Scriven, who wrote up these notes, said that William, the father of all these children, died at the home of his son William (great-grandfather of Mrs. Bigelow), about the year 1818, in the County of Rensellaer, N.Y.

  3. Seth, born Oct. 2, 1855, married Ada G. Saunders (1 boy).
  4. Betsy, born Sept. 16, 1857, married Geo. H. Hotchkiss (1 boy).
  5. Charles, born Feb. 8, 1862, unmarried.
  6. William, born Nov. 4, 1866, married Amy Curtis (2 girls).

Mrs. Tacy Scriven Bigelow (Mrs. W.H. Bigelow), lived at Hartfield, Chant Co, New York, in 1902, when she wrote up this record. Her brother Seth Scriven lived in Mayfield, Chant Co. N.Y. at that time. This information was given in correspondence to her cousin, Mrs. Sarah E. Scriven (Mrs. Cyrus Stayner, Edgar, Neb.) in 1902.

The following record was written up by Wm. S. Smith of Sheakleyville, Mercer Co., Penn. as he learned from his wife's mother, who was living with them, and was over 80 years old, in 1902. Her name was Susannah Vergeson Scriven, wife of Benjamin, son of Matthias and Anna Sabin Scriven.

    James W., son of Matthias and Martha Wiggins Scriven, married Ellen Rockwell, had 3 children. 1. Inez, who married a Mr. Pease. 2. Almeda, unmarried. 3. One son died in infancy. They lived in Roanoke, Ind. until 1902, then in Pasadena, California.

    Mary A., daughter of Matthias and Martha Wiggins Scriven, married Winslow Martin, had 3 children. 1. Fred was married and had 1 boy to live. 2. Bertie married Albert Boardwell, had 1 girl Laura; married a second husband, Mr. Cadwell, and lived at Strawberry Creek, Iowa, in 1902. 3. Elsie, unmarried.

    David Mosher, son of Matthias and Martha Wiggins Scriven, married Sarah Ann Laughlin. Born to them were:

    1. Adelia (Delia), born Oct. 14, 1863, married John H. Wolfe (no children).
    2. Martha, born Sept. 3, 1865, married Andrew J. Wharton (6 children).
    3. Jane, born Sept. 3, 1865, married Wm. H. Safley (2 boys).
    4. Ida, born July 1, 1868, married G. W. Hurt (2 girls and 1 boy).

Bemby. Lincoln married Florence Battles, had 1 boy (James) and 1 girl (Della) -- lived at Holstein, Nebr. Alpha married Frank Williams -- had 2 boys and 1 girl -- lived at Marion Iowa.

    Martha A., daughter of Matthias and Martha Wiggins Scriven, married Guy Merrick. Had several children, no record.

    11. Harriet A., daughter of Benjamin and Susannah Vargason Scriven, married T.B. Carnahan, had 5 boys, 4 girls -- lived near Karmerer, Wyoming. Visited her sister, Susan M. Smith, at Sheakleyville, Penn., in August 1902.


    Stephen, son of Matthias and Anna Sabin Scriven, married Polly Larabee (was living at Erickson, Nebr. in 1902). Born to them were John, Marie, Rosa, Mary, Sarah, and Matthias [Matthias Hollenbeck].
    John, son of Stephen and Polly Larabee Scriven, married (not known), lived in Erickson, Nebr. in 1902.
    Matthias, son of Stephen and Polly Larabee Scriven, married (not known), had John H. (Attorney in Mitchell, S. Dak. in 1899)

    Oliver Gilbert, son of Matthias and Anna Sabin Scriven, married Clarinda Wiggins (sister of Martha Wiggins, Matthias's wife). To them were born Mary Ellen, Joseph Lawrence, Jane Ann, Charles Matthias, Thomas Hartwell {all in Penn.}, and Iseral Perry, Matilda Elizabeth, John Wesley, and William H. [all in Iowa.] (Jane was frozen to death at age 17).
    William H. married Ella Canfield -- had Clara and Anna.
    John Wesley married Ella Canfield Scriven {his brother's wife}, to them were born Jennie, Ines (or Clara), and Laura. Clara married a Mr. Manchester. Jennie married a Mr. Trezonia. Laura was attending College in 1928.

    Aaron, son of Matthias and Anna Sabin Scriven, married Harriet Vargeson. They had Frank, Sally, Anna, Benjamin, David, Eunice, Salindy and several more died in infancy.
    Benjamin, son of Aaron and Harriet Vergeson Scriven, married F.O. Hungerford. To them were born Edward, Harry, and one son died. Lived at Parsons, Kan. in 1902. Harry now lives in Glendale, Calif.[address] March 1926.

    Benjamin, son of William and Mary Mosher Scriven, married Temperance Sabin (sister of Anna, Matthias's wife). They had many children, but no record. The following Benjamin may be a son, perhaps another named Julia [Julian].

    Benjamin Henry, son of Benjamin and Temperance Sabin Scriven, married Mahala Whaley. They had Benjamin Henry, Alphonso (who died in the Civil War), and Elmore Dickinson. Benjamin Henry died, and his wife married a Mr. Wade and had several children; and she, her husband, one small child, and a relative, Jane Ann Scriven, all froze to death in a blizzard Dec. 21, 1856 near Monticello, Iowa.

    Benjamin Henry, son of Benjamin Henry and Mahala Whaley Scriven, married Nancy Cole (lived at Perth, Kan., in 1902). To them were born:
    1. Edwin Elsmore, born Sept. 10, 1866, married Nancy Swartzel
    2. Grant, born Nov. 28, 1871, married Cordelia Tilson
    3. Walter (died in infancy)
    4. Freddie (died in infancy)

    6. Manly Leroy, born July, 1881, married Effie Drennan, had 4 boys: Harold, Floyd, Carl, and Don.

    Edwin Elsmore and Nancy Swartzel Scriven live in Wichita, Kan., have 6 children, as follows:

    2. Rollie Evert, born 1893 (killed in the World War).

    Dora May Scriven and Wilson Gee had 3 children: Bessie, Chester, Henrietta -- lived in Jewell, Kan. in 1926.

    Manly Leroy Scriven and Effie Drennon have Harold, Floyd, Carl, Don (lived in Burden, Kan. in 1927).

    James Madison Scriven, son of Alpheus Clark and [Drucilla Craig] Scriven, married Sarah Ann Bales -- lived in Alexandria, Nebr. in 1902. They had 4 boys:
