NOTES

*1 Most of the dates of death are taken from memorial inscriptions as transcribed in the 19th century. Clearly, either the memorial or the transcription contains errors!

The Duttons were strongly non-conformist, and that the second son, Thomas, was baptised may have been because he was named after Ann ORPWOOD's family (perhaps her father), who were not non-conformist. Richard Dutton's will, and the memorial inscriptions have made it possible to work out who belongs in this family.

It is harder to determine who Ann Orpwood's parents are, since there is only her age to go on and this may be inaccurate. Two Ann Orpwoods were baptised in Bampton within a couple of years of each other, and one of these died before marrying. It is possible that these two Anns were cousins, but researchers differ in their opinion of this.

Richard Dutton's shop can still be seen in Bampton, and is still named Duttons; it is now a dress shop.
