G. S. Sentelle, Veteran, Dies

Served in Union Army; Was 96 Years Old

G. S. Sentell, 96, veteran of the Union army of the War Between the States, who participated in the battle of Fort Sanders, died at 1:30 a. m. yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. Marshall Lea, 3043 East Fifth Avenue.

Mr. Sentelle had been enjoying good health until recently.  He celebrated his birthday anniversary a month ago.

He was born at Hendersonville, N. C., March 22, 1840 and moved to Greeneville when he was 16 years old.  At the outbreak of the War Between the States he enlisted in the Union army and served for four years.  Mr. Sentelle was a member of the Eighth Tennessee cavalry regiment and served under Captain Gilmore.

Engaged in Farming

After the war, Mr. Sentelle engaged in farming.   He also served for 36 years as a member of the Greene county court.  He had been an elder in the Presbyterian church for 60 years and had been a Mason for a number of years.

Surviving are four sons, E. M., J. R. and the Rev. C. L. Sentelle of Greeneville, and Dr. M. E. Sentelle, dean of Davidson college, and three daughters, Mrs. Agnes Brown of Davidson, N. C., Mrs. Jennie Houghton of Birmingham and Mrs. May Lea of Knoxville.

Funeral services will be held to day at 2:30 p. m. at Mount Zion Presbyterian Mission church in Greeneville, Tenn.  The Rev. Moses Hay will officiate.  Masons will have charge of services at the grave.

During the war Mr. Sentelle served as a lieutenant in the Union army and had charge of a company of men stationed at the old Southern depot in Knoxville.  He attributed his long life to clean living.  He was an elder in the Presbyterian church for 60 years and devoted much of his time to reading his Bible.
