Widow's Claim for Pension states Gardner Thomas was a privage in Company M command by Captain Joseph Collins in the 1st Regiment of Tennessee Cavalry, command by Col. Robert Johnson in the war of 1861, and he died at Triune, in the State of Tennessee on the 23rd day of May 1863 of "Fever Contracted"

Letter from Adjutant General's Office stating "on the Muster Roll of Co. M of that Regiment for the months of September & October, 1863, there is the following evidence of service.  He is reported, "Died of Measles at Triune Tenn May 23d, 1863."

20 Aug 1866

Commissioned Officer's Certificate of Soldier's Death states Gardner Thomas, Company M of the 1st Regiment of Tennessee Cavalry, that while in the service of the United States, and in the line of his duty "the said soldier was taken sick at Triune Tennessee about the 15 day of May 1863 and died on or about 23 day of May 1863 from ... disease contracted while in the service of the United States"

29 Oct 1866

Surgeon General's Office doument signed by J.J. Woodward, Brevet Major and Assistant Surgeon states Private Thomas, Gardner, Co. M, 1st Regiment, East Tenn Cav, is reported to Office as having died May 23d, 1863 of "Acute Diarrhea"

2 Jan 1868

Treasury Department, Second Auditor's Office document states "Gardner Thomas was enrolled on the 2nd day of April, 1863, and mustered into service on the 2nd day of April, 1863, a private in the Co. M, 1st Regiment Tenn. Cav. Volunteers.  On the muster roll of said Company, for the months of May & June, 1863, he is reported "Died May 23, 1863"

13 Jan 1868

Certificate shows beginning May 24, 1863, Malinda Thomas (Franklin's widow) received $8 per month, and additional amount of $2 per month for each of three children beginning July 25, 1866 until they reach the age of 16
