bullet  General Notes:

Little did I know that my thank you for the birthday card would get to you after Aunt Bizz had died but I would like you to know my feelings about her. She was my favorite aunt.

I watched from a distance as I was the second born and the tomboy but I did watch and learn. Our house just took on a different feeling when Aunt Bizz was coming. . When she came to Marinette or visited us it was like a very important person was coming. She always got the white bedroom. She taught me about the care of fingernails as I used to bite them. She would polish them for me. And to use powder and to try to be feminine. She was always soft and smelled so good. She was the kind of person you could cuddle up with. She always had such beautiful undergarments. Lovely French lace trims and rolled straps. And sachets to make them smell soft and nice. She had pretty shoes and lovely fur collars on her coats. Mother would sew and make lovely dresses for her. And mother would make her favorite foods - homemade noodles and steak and red cinnamon apples. Chocolate cake and a glass of milk… she drank a lot of milk.

The first gardenia I can remember was one she had. She told me about care for it and why not to touch the petals as they would turn brown. I have always been fond of gardenias ever since then.

I remember one time she came in on the late train, 2:38, and got a ride to our house. She rang the door bell and threw stones at the windows but no one heard her so she got in our car and wrapped her coat as best she could and slept there. Dad went out in the morning and found her sleeping in the car and she was so cold. He felt so bad that no-one had heard her to let her in. He still felt bad years later whenever someone talked about it.

She always sent cards on your birthday and I was so pleased when Eric was born on her birthday. She was always there when I needed to reminisce. She was a good role model of how to be a good aunt. Whenever we talked of her it was with a special glow. When I started to travel she would send me clippings of what to do to have a good trip.

I had some of her music that she had at school up until about a year ago. Etude books and special pieces. My granddaughter has some of them now. I have many memories of her. Sometimes I would write and tell her of them and it would bring things back for her too. In later years I only saw her when you two would visit Marinette but that didn't change me or the mystique of Aunt Bizz.

Bizz was a good aunt and I'm glad we had her in the family. I'm also glad she married you. She always seemed very happy. Thank you for listening. I have many good memories of her. [Martha Jaeger Mogensen] 8 9

bullet  Medical Notes:

I had a note from Martha. She is impatiently awaiting a copy of the 100-year anniversary of AAL, which is now held up because of the proposed merger of AAL and Lutheran Brotherhood. (Do you remember the story about them searching for Fred Jaeger, who was their first paid death policy? And our daughter Mary saying, "I think I know who that is.")

Anyhow, Martha says she had laser surgery on her eyes; her macular degeneration is so bad. She wants to be able to read the book before her sight is gone. "I did not know Bizz and Aunt Kitty both had it...Esther, Ruth and I now have it." That's a pretty strong family history. 10

Uncle Ray passed at about 5 pm tonight.

Kay smith (Ray Watson's niece called to tell me she was there at the time to ease his aloneness and wish him a pleasant journey to join Aunt Biz; been there a long time... long journey for him is over....

[She] said the staff was wonderful so he wasn't alone.

Uncle Ray's niece (Kay Smith from Texas) visited uncle Ray on his birthdays and noted - that some things were disappearing from his home, dug into it and found irregularities, and was appointed as his executor to protect uncle Ray's assets...

She called me about 4 months ago to establish contact and to advise she would be protecting and visiting him when she could.

About a month ago she called to say he was failing and this past week she had been contacted by the home to say the situation was terminal... and yesterday she called to say... Uncle Ray was no longer able to communicate... on morphine drip for pain... and expected to pass quickly.

Kay's instructions (by will) are to cremate and transfer the ashes for Burial in Marinette next to Aunt Biz.

She plans a graveside service in September (?), Depending on events to follow...
