• Pension Application: with the Court of Common Pleas, 21 May 1838, Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, USA. 5 Wilkes Barre May 21,1838 Hon J L Edward Dr Sir I am the attorney in law and fact of Mrs. Abigail Space and any corr may be addressed to me. I suppose I neglected to include my name on the envelope enclosing the papers. I am of certainty looking for the records of Mrs. Anne Myers. The Court there will be satisfied of the correctness of the statements in reference to her family records & the mistake specifically explained. Besides there is a living witness where evidence is on file in the Court office, and he went home with the applicants husband during the War and that he was married at that time. If the mother can be received & a favorable result had in the case the small pittance given will very much relieve the wants that no one can feel, who has not had the sordid hand of poverty heavily laid upon him - or of old age and debility without a hand to be extended for relief. That her husband was in the Service there is living evidence & but for the mistake out of a family record by the husband twenty years afterward she must forgo the provisions of life & honorable situation. She states to me that the moment after her husband had made out the record as he supposed correct she told him & convinced of the error & he promised to correct it. He did not however and she said 20 years ago. Had a copy taken ~-~ & at that time been corrected & there certainly so long ago could have been no design. I do really hope the one may be recognized.
• Pension Application: with the Court of Common Pleas, 13 Apr 1842, Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, USA. 5 Hon B. A. Bidlack My Dr Sir, In answer to a letter of yours to the Pension Office ~~~ int by one from me. J. L. Edward, Esq. says that there should be some circumstance mentioned by Benj Bidlack to show him that he remembered that he saw the wife of John Space in 1782 or 1781. I have made out a detailed statement of facts which I am sure will be satisfactory to the Department. I hope you will give this matter an early consideration as old Mrs. Space is in very needy circumstances, and I feel anxious this old Lady may be able to get something. The husband's service should really seem to entitle her to assistance. The link now supplied by the testimony of your father, is the only one ~~~ out by Mr. Edward; and may I ask you to lay this paper before the Department at once. And will you influence in the old woman's behalf. Let me know her fate at once. Yours truly, /s/ J. Hinpel Wilkes Barr Apl 13,1842
• Pension Application: with the Court of Common Pleas, 14 Apr 1842, Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, USA. 5 Wilkes Barre Apr 14,1842 Dr Sir, I have enclosed to Hon B. A. Bidlack, with some other papers, the deposition of Benjamin Bidlack, the father of our Representative, a very respectable clergyman and one of felicity, in the application of Abigail Space for a Pension. In your letter of April 21,1842 you state that "the proof of her marriage having been before the termination of the revolutionary Service of her husband is not sufficient. Benj. Bidlack stated that sometime in the year 1782 he became acquainted with the claimant & that she was there reputed and believed to be the wife of John Space. He should state for us what circumstances he is enabled to determine the time to have been in 1782. And it should be clearly proved that her husband served after her marriage." & Mr. Bidlack has given in his last examination to state circumstances that I think will be satisfactory on the period of service after marriage. Mr. B. thinks, as you will discover, that it was 1781 and he comes to this conclusion from a detail of facts - this is the only defect presented in the testimony - and this being now supplied - may this offer you the speedy disposition of the old Soldiers needy widow. She is in want, & I feel anxious for her. Given Most Respectfully Truly /s/ J Hinpel
