Peter SPACE (SPIECE) - Sussex County NJ Posted by Cindy Bergeron Scherwinski on December 29, 1998 at 07:10:20: I am looking to correspond with anyone who has connections/information on the Peter SPACE family. Peter and his younger brother, John, came to America from Germany presumedly in 1765 and settled in Germany Flats, Sussex County, New Jersey. The original spelling was SPIECE. My line descends from John Space but I am interested in exchanging information. <=====>

HALEY, Maude SPACE & Clifton E. SHAFER. We have accumulated a lot of information on some of Peter's lines. We have never found the name SPIECE in German research. I understand from a German language expert that "C" is never used in the language unless it is connected with another letter, such as "H" and then it is not pronounced with the "S" sound. We once heard that Peter and John (there may have been others, too) spent time in England before coming to America. If so, that may be where the name was changed to SPIECE. However, there were lots of SPIESS's in Germany with similar given names, so that may be the original spelling. <=====> Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 08:46:28 -0500 From: A&C Scherwinski anahar@charter.net I am researching my SPACE family line which may have connections with the SPEESE spellings as well as SPIECE. Brothers, John and Peter SPACE (or SPIECE/SPEESE) immigrated from Germany in 1765. Some sources state the brothers spent time in England before coming to "America" which might explain why there are some researchers who state that the name was once spelled SPIECE. According to Snell's History of Sussex & Warren Counties, New Jersey (1881), Peter was born near Berlin, Germany. The only areas in Germany according to the IGI in which we have been able to find a surname similar to SPACE were Bayern (Bavaria) and Westfalen (Westfalia) where there are some SPIESS families. The given names in these families were very similar to SPACE family names here. Tradition says the German spelling was SPIECE, but in the German language, "C" is never used without a "K" or an "H" and is then pronounced differently, so if the name was ever spelled that way, it must have been changed after leaving Germany. The progenitor of my line is younger brother John Space - he immigrated from Warren County, NJ with his wife, Abigail MOTT, to Wyoming Valley area in Luzerne County, PA. They remained in this area until their deaths in1813 (John) and 1839 (Abigail). <=====> Space/Spiece/Spies German Roots Posted by Dottie Harnish on August 08, 1999 at 12:42:16: My husband is a descendent of Peter Space who is believed to have come to the US in 1765 from Germany (via England) with his brother John, and settled in Germany Flats, NY (Peter was father of Mannus Space). I'm curious about where the info came from regarding Peter and John's date of arrival in the US, how we know (think) that they came from Germany, and why we believe they spent some time in England (where the name may have been changed). 3
