AS LEAVES FALL
So Pass Our Friends to the Winter of Death
JOHN PETER DIEDRICH

John Peter Diedrich, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Kaukauna died at his home on his farm at the western boundary of the city limits Sunday morning at two o'clock. Deceased was born in Germany on the 16th day of January, 1829 and came to Kaukauna with his parents in 1843. At the age of 14 he entered the employ of the late George Lawe as chore boy; and his faithfulness in this menial position characterized his actions all through life. At one time Mr. Diedrich had charge of the waterway of the Fox river from Green Bay to Portage - both before and after the organization of the Green Bay and Mississippi Canal Company. He was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Kraemer of this city, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Father Vandenbrooke at Little Chute where this pioneer missionary had established his mission.

For twenty two years Mr. Diedrich was treasurer of the town of Kaukauna he also held the position of supervisor for several terms. He had a rich fund of reminiscences of the early history of Kaukauna and was able to entertain his visitors with vivid descriptions of the hardships and pleasures of pioneer life.

Seven of his ten children survive him besides his beloved wife Elizabeth -- the partner of his pioneer days being accidentally killed by the cars more than twenty years ago. Of the children Peter makes Kaukauna his home, Joseph lives at Park Falls, Minnesota; Mrs. Peter Van Handle and Miss Barbara at Houghton, Michigan; Mrs. Elizabeth Smith and the Misses Katie and Mary at Oconto.

The funeral took place from Holy Cross church Tuesday morning at nine o'clock and was attended by a host of relatives and friends - many of them pioneers. Those from out of the city who attended the funeral were Mrs. Henry Kreiss, Mrs. David Brett Schneider, Mrs. Alberty, Mrs. Lawler and Mrs. Stegman of Appleton; Mrs. Callies and Miss Kramer of Oshkosh; John and Jacob Kramer of Fond du Lac; Mrs. Vose and Mrs. Schmldke of Grand Rapids, Mich.

Thus was laid to rest not only a sturdy pioneer but a worthy parent, a kind friend, a good citizen and a Christian gentleman, a record that every human being should strive to make."

Theory: I'ts just a mistake, with the name Wilhemenia substituted for Joseph. (Found some records not in the index and vice versa)
