bullet  General Notes:

Philip's children, as they came into their inheritance, were paid off for their share by Elfinia Space Yerks for a small amount on the dollar so she gained ownership of the Space farm. [Ester Jager Bushey]

Philip was a gay blade and he squandered his inheritance and left his children uncared for. His wife, Alice Tower Space, died when the last child was born as did the 2nd born, Lizzie - of measles. The two youngest children, Joseph and Eva, were raised by Nelson Howard and Gratia Space, they being childless. Philip spent a period of time in prison at Ionia, Mich for an unknown offense. He then returned to Grand Ledge to find his father dying of cancer and he nursed him 'til his death (1-2 years) [Ester Jager Bushey]

Phillip had quite a few children and when his wife died, my mother's brother, Uncle Nelson and Aunt Grace wanted to adopt Eva and Joseph but Uncle Philip wouldn't agree so they just kept them and raised them. [Kathryn Scherer Schuck]

He spent a period (?) in prison at Iona, Mich. for unknown offense. John &Alta at one time tried to adopt children, Joseph and Eva but Philip forbade it. Those children were raised by Nelson & Gratia. Philip went to pieces after Alice's death and neglected the children. After his release from Iona Prison he came back to Delta Township. Nelson was very ill with cancer. Philip nursed him for 2 years until Nelson died. Then he lived his daughter, Mrs. Clinton Murphy and then his son John in Detroit where he died. He was returned to the family farm now controlled by his half-sister and husband, Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Yerks, for funeral services and buried in the family plot at Delta Center Cemetery. Mrs. Colville sang the favorite hymns of the family very sweetly, and the floral tributes were many and beautiful one being telegraphed from his son Elsworth in Montana. He was a good neighbor, especially in sickness and trouble, an observing man, loved good reading especially fond of histories, gave his children schooling, and wanted them to have the best in life. At the last he was enabled to trust in Jesus as his Savior from sin and died peacefully in that trust. His surviving children are Ellsworth of Montana, Mrs. Myldred Murphy, John and Joseph Space all of Detroit. Mrs. Ruth Foley of St. Myers, Fla. Mrs Eva Silver of Stanton and Mrs Alta Murphy of Grand Ledge. Grand children, Mrs. Irene Davis and Derrill Murphy of Grand Ledge and Carl Philip Space at West Point Military Academy, West Point, N.
