NIAGARA STABBING AFFRAY

E.G. Laymon will be examined to day at Marinette on a charge of attempted murder, he being the principal character in the stabbing affray at Niagara last week. Laymon is a one-armed trapper and has a bad reputation in his own country and things will be made hot for him this time as he has always been too prone to pull or draw a weapon on inoffensive citizens.

Peter Stoveken, a saloonkeeper, ejected him from his place of business after dispute over a game of dice and Laymon returned later with the probable intention of going after Stoveken. After a little war of words Stoveken attempted to punch Laymon but the wily trapper dodged him and managed to draw a large jack knife which he used with terrible effect. Stoveken's neck was badly slashed and he was taken to the hospital at Norway. He was in a serious condition for a time but his recovery is now assured.

During the excitement Laymon escaped and traveled a considerable distance on horseback with a posse in pursuit. He was discovered asleep in a haystack near an old lumber camp, by Constable Douglas who arrested him and after firmly shackling him brought him to the county jail at Marinette. Layman (sic) will enter a plea of self defense.
